Graham Greene's American'' said a lot about ^ tenor of Mr. Leon's remarks seems a bit extravagant, but he may have „ cr sonal knowledge and experience which enables him to cite a "nearly continuous error in cur practice of diplomacy worldwide." He does not enumerate his credentials in contrast to mine, but imputes some bombast in my claim to experience from 1951 through 1919 in close contact with Latin Americans. Incidentally he seems to have missed the point I made about overwhelming anti- Soviet sentiment among the leaders down there. In many years of work among them and in 15 years of residence till 1979 I developed a real appreciation of their great intellectual ability and. in many, their high idealism. I would not indulge in any grammatical "knit-picking” in this. A very polite comment on my letter to Mr. Haig was received, and so well written that I enclose it for your perusal. I do not know Mr. Smith but thank him for his comment which I quote: “.we nced more j n p u[ from people like you who have wed in Latin America and know the true situation." ■ do not feel that Latin mericans hate America or r« en . can f' bul ralher lha t they , cn -h c a “‘tude of our Z corps wh ich 1 have th™, v ' ° !c hand throughout areiK^k 5 ' $ ur anim bassadors y very adroil and many the J plomals 1 know, but the stiff Pber F and attitudes of followed 5 T cerlain P°hcies "‘despread r have lnculca ted P Presentment and often „ KNIVES Columbus Cutlery M ="day w' d Colurnbus Wednesday, Friday 8: 3O-5.OO vast give-aw^ ., ° m Ihal ' ‘he and ‘he sale 0 , 8ra ms of AID much lower th * hcal 31 P ri ce3 market and 0Ur domestic of our foreign n.7 ° lber as Pects us ‘ook like 8 ?, P , y havc made least k monkeys or fools at Secretary is t u my letter t0 the Latin neieh ha 1 bclieve lhe America and the w Central South win £ h 0 hers to ‘he oonvtawtS th T , US if we Practical ? h .
