The U. S. Justice Department
rejected North Carolina’s
proposed state House and Senate
redistricting plans Monday,
saying they discriminate against
black voters. It was the second
time in five months that Senate
and House plans put forth by the
state have been struck down and
the decisions threw further doubt
over when the state would be able
to hold its primary elections.
U. S. Senate GOP Leader
Howard H. Baker, Jr. said
Monday the Senate Finance
Committee might vote to repeal
the 10% personal income tax cut
scheduled for July 1983 unless
Congress and the White House
agree on a budget compromise.
Britain is cool to the latest
compromise on the Falkland
Island issue with Argentina as
worked out by Sec. of State

Western Carolina University’s
Kappa Lambda Chapter of Phi
Beta Lambda placed in nine
competitive events at the 28th
annual PBL State Leadership
Conference April 2—4 in
Charlotte.
First-place winners were
Charlie Daw of Chapel Hill in the
Data Processing II event and
Susie Searcy of Mill Spring in
Business Law. As a result of their
winnings, both are eligible to
compete at the PBL national
conference in Indianapolis, Ind.,
July 5—8.
Second-place winners were
Cheryl Fore of Asheville,
Marketing; Allen Hincher of
Elkin, Accounting II; Eddie
Lindsey of Lake Junaluska,
Accounting I; and Cathy Watkins
of Morrisville, Ms. Future
Business Executive.
Other WCU winners were Carl
O’Dell of Andrews, fourth place
in Data Processing I; Stephen
Isgett of Asheville, fifth place in
Word Processing; and
Parliamentary Procedure Team
members Greg Adams of New
Bern, Annie Brown of Whittier,
John Hall of Spruce Pine, Eddie
Lindsey, and Lynette Moss of
Zirconia in fifth place.
Greg Adams was elected PBL’s
state historian, giving him
responsibility for publishing an
organizational newsletter
through WCU.

J. Kenneth Williams
J. Kenneth Williams, 41,
Silver Creek Community is
of
a
candidate for the County School
Board seat from White Oak
Township.
Mr Williams is a native of Polk
County and is married to the
former Patsy Arledge. They have
two daughters, Amber will be in
kindergarten this fall and Carla
is three They are members of
Silver Creek Baptist Church
where Mr. Williams is active in
all areas of the church.
Mr. Williams is a past member
of FISH and is a member of
Horse Creek Masonic Lodge.
He is a graduate of Tryon High
School and served in the Air
Force for three and a half years,
three of which were in Germany.

held their Annual Pinewood
Derbv Race this past Sunday
afternoon, April 18th at Tryon
Town Hall. Before an overflow
crowd of parents and relatives
cub scout leaders and cub scouts’

forty-foot race track. The raw
