Tryon Dally Bulletin, Thurs., May 6,1982 Communication This is the last in a series of letters answering questions about The Upstairs artspace in Tryon, One of the most asked questions concerning The Upstairs is “How is this organization supported?” Of course the immediate comeback to that, as with any arts organization is, "with much difficulty", but some more specific facts and information might be interesting and in order here. Our support comes from three principal sources: public contributions, The National Endowment for the Arts, and the North Carolina Arts Council. An actual breakdown of our income during fiscal year 1980-81 is as follows. Grants: $5906.40 Federal 1856.40 State 3250.00 Polk Co. Community Foundation 800.00 Public Contributions $2694.25 Individuals 2569.25 North Carolina National Bank 125.00 Any educational organization must rely heavily on the support of individuals and institutions that believe in what it is doing. As funds from the Federal government begins to dry up, we must fall back on the communities we serve. For that reason, The Upstairs will be instigating a membership drive soon in the local communities. We have come a long way from our 1979 budget of $1575.00, but we have a long way still to come, and we’re hoping you'll join us. Looking forward to seeing you at the Upstairs.
