The news summary: The Supreme Court said Monday that public schools generally must allow student prayer groups to meet and worship if other student clubs are permitted at school. In a speech at Stanford University Monday, Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev implored scientists in both the U.S and the U.S.S.R to join in determining how nuclear weapons could be destroyed without harming people or the environment. University of North Carolina at Asheville Chancellor David G. Brown announced Monday that he will resign his post to become provost of Wake Forest University. Brown recently spoke in Tryon and a senior leadership program started during his tenure in Asheville is now being expanded to Tryon through the auspices of Isothermal Community College The Polk County Board of Education and the county Board of Commissioners are meeting this morning to discuss funding for the school system. The two boards are at least a few hundred Continued On Back Page Steps To Hope To Buy Building Steps to Hope will be allowed to purchase the building it occupies near the sheriff’s office in Columbus. The building will be sold for $30,000, with Steps to Hope paying $10,000 and receiving a $20,000 grant from the county for the remainder of the purchase price The issue was raised by area residents Bob Worsnop, who appealed to the Board of Commissioners for consideration of Steps to Hope's needs. Worsnop asked the board to reconsider its decision to table the matter. Valedictorian of the class of 1990 was Chadwick L. Lowry, son of Mr and Mrs. Jim Lowry He will be attending Duke University in the fall and will major in pre law. He is a recipient of a Benjamin K. Joan Schairer, owner, says “The whole crew is anxiously awaiting larger quarters to be able to fulfill their cooking fantasies.” Catering by Joan was established fouryears ago in the Trade St. Mall.
