Initial winners of the awards were Rankin posthumously, and "Dr. Marjorie Lee Browne, a retired North Carolina Central University teacher. Rankin taught at Duke for 2(> \ears before his retirement in 1H5K. He was a pioneer in the development of mathematics education institutes. He was cited by the Internal Revenue ?or his , role in developing materials for use in teaching high school pupils how to file income tax returns. DC. She was _ the first black woman to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics froih the University of Michigan. She initiated the first National Science Foundation Institute for the retraining of junior and senior high schodl mathematjps teachers at a predominatelyblack institution.
