He will speak Monday, March 23, at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall. The symposium, “One World. Your Future...?” (March 23-April 6) will focus on the limits of the world’s growth potential. “We are trying to educate people on how they can coexist with an environment in an ecological system,” said symposium chairman Larry Shirley. William Ruckelshaus, former director of the Environmental Protection Agency: Stuart Udall, former Secretary of the Interior Department; author Garrett Hardin; and nutritionist Jean Mayer are among the other speakers participating in the symposium. The Carolina Union Current Affairs Com mittee, Institute of Nutrition, Institute of Environmental Studies and the Carolina Population Center are spon soring the symposium. “Human survival is in jeopardy,” said Shirley, a junior from Cary. “The starvation of millions, thei struggle for scarce resources and growing numbers of environmental disruptions are signs that there is little time to avert disaster on an unpre cedented scale. People must learn to cut down consumption and change their lifestyles,” he said. Gary Hari (D.-Colo.) and Rep. Joe Fischer (D.-Vir.) will speak during that week.
