Hereditary defects are ruthlessly democratic. They appear in all income levels, in every race and in any of man's social divisions. Although some types of genetic defects are found almost solely within once race or ethnic group, no branch of the family of man is exempt from defective genes. Nor do defects strike 4 ? * conveniently near large medical centers where the most recent knowledge about preventing them is being applied. Such diseases as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia and Down's Syndrome, (mongolism) are transmitted genetically. Each year about 250,000 American babies are born with some type of physical or mental defect. Because these defects occur in every community, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is taking help ? a t il m m - closer to tne tamutes who need it.
