Verse 21 -- They thought he might be Elias whom God promised to send before the Coming of the Lord or he might be the prophet spoken of in Deuteronomy 18:15. 1 Verse 22 -- After the Jews found out that John was neither of these, they wanted an answer they could take back to the authorities.
