They've Got Guns Aimed At Rams Sports Robert Eller Sports Editor Here’s a nice little riddle for you. What do Muhammad Ali and Jim McKinley have in common? The answer?Bothare bold, brah, self confident and tend :o brag. And what is the biggest difference between the wo? Ali backs up what he says and McKinley? Well let’s just say that Jim has a lot to learn. For the past few months both Ali and McKinley have leen doing a lot of talking. Ali had been boasting about he lesson he was going to teach Leon Spinks, the man ■ho wrestled his heavyweight title away fi’om him in 'ebruary, in their return match. “I’m going to teach him a lesson. I’m going to dance 11 night. It will be like a professor and a student, and so in went the 36 year old dethroned champion as he irepared to try and become the only man to ever regain he heavyweight title on two occasions. Meanwhile, McKinley was preparing to begin his lecond season as head coach of the North Carolina A&T ggies. In addition to his football coaching duties he lad just been made the schools acting Athletic (irector, giving him the reigns of the schools athletic irogram. ‘1 thought we were the best football team in the lEAC at the end of last season. Last season the layers had to learn our system but this year they are ot new at it. I*m not making predictions but we are oing to be a great, great football team,” etc. etc. etc. In February Ali was confident he would beat Spinks nd retain the title but it didn’t happen and last year ■hen McKinley assumed the reigns at A&T he said he spected to go undefeated and he lost the first game of le season. So here they were the fellows who were so sure they )uld do what they had predicted. McKinley lost the rst game of the season again. But he still could claim le MEAC title. Ali got his shot first on Friday night in the New jrleans Superdome. He taught Spinks a lesson, he need throughout the 15 rounds, it was like a ofessor and a student as he confused Spinks and won 11 of the 15 rounds according to this writers scorecard. |e had done the thing he set out to do, regain the title, d become the only man to ever win it three i times;- d at age 36 no less. Now it was Jirn’s turn to back up his talk. Into eensboro came the South Carolina State Bulldogs, e team that had wrestled the MEAC crown away m the Aggies. The same South Carolina State Team that had dealt [cKinley’s team a 52-0 whipping in Orangeburg, S.C. 1st last season, McKinley’s first. The team McKinley lew he must beat if the Aggies were to be a great itball team, at least at this point in the season. [The Aggies played galantly in the first half on jfense, forcing six Malcolm Montgomery punts and abbing an interception and a fumble recovery. But ile the defense was super for A&T the S.C. State ense was allowing the Aggies but one first down and 6 yards total offense. Aggies even took the lead scoring first early in ■ « third quarter. Then S.C. State decided to make Kinley eat his words scoring 34 points over the next minutes. >0 the moral to the little story is, “If you can’t dice’ what you preach then stay out of the pullpit or n t let your mouth sell tickets, your actions can’t h.’’ Tere’s hoping Ali will quit while he is ahead and that Kinley’s “great, great team will at least play well 'Ugh to stop the not so loyal, (or at least not Saturday ht), fans from booing. oethune Cookman 11 - Livingstone 6 WSSU 24 - NCCU18 Alcorn St. 16 - Alabama St. 12 Broadwater, Va. 25 - St. Paul’s 0 Elizabeth City St. IS - Virginia St. 14 Florida A&M 21 - Albany, Ga. 7 Hampton Inst. 24 - Shaw 19 Jackson St. 41 - Prairie View 14 Kentucky St. 7 - Morehead St. 7, tie Norfolk St. 34 - Fayetteville St. 12 S. And although “Wild Bill” still stands as the top gun after a duel with the new kid Ray Green in his own home town, no less, last Saturday, his days could be numbered. You see Bill’s boys have showed a slight weakness to the passing attack early in the season and in Virginia Union’s Garfield Mizzelle they will face the young man who has dropped eight enemy defensive backs with touchdown passes this season in only two games. Mizzelle has also run for a score, putting points on the board like he was using a calculator. Bailey not only has Mizzelle in his gang but another “quick cat” by the name of Judge Thomas. This fellow Thomas has the pros falling all over themselves to get a stop watch on his speed and a seat in the stadium. Then there is this mean man called Nathan Fairley who wants to run over people and don’t forget this guy named Malcolm Barnwell. You see he is doubly dangerous because he can run with it and run under it when ole Mizzells throws it. Then they got these two big ole fellows on the Willard Bailey Dick Price offensive line that was two of the best in the CIAA last year. They call ’em Earnesto Young and Curtis Lyman and both of ’um weigh more than 250 and then they got three other big mean dudes on that line. Why they have put 72 points on the board in just two games. Whew! have them fellows got an offense. But then on the other hand Ole “Wild Bill’s got this fellow named Charlie Griffin that helps him figure out how to stop these bad dudes from takin’ his title away. Him and Bill have come up with this here defense they call the Wide Tackle Six and that thing gets tougher to move on the closer the other team gets to the goal line and every time the other team seems like they gonna’ take Ole Bill’s title away they intercept passes and stop teams on the one and all kinds of stuff like that. And Rams Survive Eagles Old “Wild Bill” and his sidekick Charlie will sure working hard this week to keep that dude Mizzelle from throwin’ a bunch of touchdowns and Judge and his buddies from runnin’. But don’t you forgit that “Wild Bill’s” got this little bitty quarterback that runs like a scared rabbit and this big ole tall fellow that runs right over people and a hole bunch of other fellows that’s just waiting to git a chance to run with that ball. That little bitty quarterback can pass too and they got this fellow called Billy Diggs that can’t make up his mind if he is a football player or a basketball player and he thinks he’s supposed to catch everything that comes his way. then they got this cat with long hair that kicks and runs and catches passes and all kinds of stuff. Whew! they got a bad offense too, and Willard’s gang give up 35 points one time and nothing the next. Wonder how good they really are? Well tell ya’ what I’m going with the fellows I thinks got the best defense and that’s “Wild Bill” and Charlie. Could be wrong though cause last year they run up and down the field all night a scorin’ touchdowns until this big ole tall fellow got mad and run the ball all over everybody in the third quarter. Why they put 70 points on that scoreboard between them before it was over but Ole “Wild Bill” won anyhow. He just always seems to win somehow. Everybody deserves to be a little silly sometimes, seriously, it should be a great game, so close that its hard to predict, but here goes WSSU 27 VIRGINIA UNION 24 WHEW! By Robert Eller Sports Editor It must have seemed to the Ralms secondary as if they were in Pearl Harbor last Saturday in Durham as North Carolina Central fired 42 bombs at the defending CIAA champs. But in the end Spurgeon Thompson intercepted a Steve Cauthorn pass with 1:11 left to save the Rams 15th straight regular sea son win. “We did what we had to do to win,” commented coach Bill Hayes after Thompson(^ end zone in terception had sealed the victory. “It was terribly hot out there and the secondary got a little tired but they rose to the occasion when they had too,” said Hayes defending his team that had been outgained 388 to 340 yards on offense. The Eagles had just thrown a school record 42 passes in the game and piled up 248 yards through the air. “They completed 15 of 42 passes for one touchdown and Kermit hit 8 of 15 for two touchdowns. We scored three touch downs and a field goal and they scored one touchdown and four field goals so I don’t see anything to get excited about,” added Hayes almost in defense of his teams performance. The Rams fumbled 9 times during the hot muggy afternoon and Central re covered five of them while controlling the ball for more than 33 minutes. WSSU had the ball for less than 27 minutes during the game. Central picked up 19 first downs to the Rams 14 but WSSU showed their effici ency converting 6 of 10 third down situations while Central made good on only 5 of 15 third down conver sions. For the second week in a row the Rams took off like gang busters after Monty Brinkley returned the open ing kickoff to the 41. Randy Bolton fumbled on the first play fi’om scrimmage but on second down Timmy Newsome took off for 40 of his 213 yards and the Rams went on to march 59 yards in 7 plays to take a 7-0 lead. The score came on a five yard pass from Kermit Blount to Antonio Howard with 11:46 left in the open ing period. Ray Greene’s rejuvinated Eagles came -back to close within 7-3 early in the second quarter. After a Blount fumble was recovered on the Eagle 37 they used 11 plays to move to the Ram 19 where Eric Hines kicked the first of his school record four field goals from 35 yards out 13:41 before halftime. The Rams came back to take a 14-3 lead at intermis sion going 84 yards in eight plays. Timmy Newsome scampered 68 yards again on the second play from scrimmage after a Blount fumble was recoveredby the Rams. Five plays later he scored from the one with 3:43 left in the half. Central took the insueing kickoff and moved to the Ram 17 but the first of Thompson’s two endzone interceptions killed the threat as the half ended. The Eagles came right back to take the second half kickoff and march 80 yards in only four plays highlight ed by a 44 yard TD comple- See Page 13 COLONY 680 PEIjERS CREEK PKWY. 723-0504 NCLB565 Our 79's are here but theres nowhere to put them.
