Page 12- Th® Quronlcle-Saturday September 23, 1978 Newsome Talks Little^ Runs a Lot By Robert Eller Sporta Editor WSSU running back Tim my Newsome has been named as the Winston- Salem Chronicle’s “Ram of the Week” for his play in the Rams 24-18 win over North Carolina Central last Saturday. The 6-3 220 pounder had the best game of his career picking up 213 yards on 21 carries for the day. The bullish junior had runs of 68, 47, 40, and 18 yards as the Eagles concentrated on stopping quarterback Kermit Blount from getting the ball outside. "Timmy really came through for us when we needed him,” commented coach Bill Hayes of the Ahoskie native’s play. “They cut off two of the options on our veer but that opened up the dive for Timmy.” The game marked the second time in Newsome’s career that he has gone over 200 yards in a game, he picked up 202 yards on 22 carries last season in the teams 39-31 win over Virginia Union including 134 in the third quarter alone. That performance earned him recognition as the CIAA and NAIA Back of the Week. His performance on Saturday could earn him the same honors again. The team’s leading rush er in each of his two seasons at Ramland, New- some gained 578 yards as a freshman and seemed on season until he was struck down by a knee injury that required surgery. But he came back from the surgery to lead the CIAA in rushing average last season, picking up 908 yards in 9 games. He was forced to miss the team’s last two games and the Gold Bowl against South Carolina State with an in jury. For his 77 perform ance he was named to the All-CIAA team and re- cieved NAIA All-American honorable mention. With 377 yards in his first three games Timmy seems on his way to the elusive 1,000 yard season but says he feels no pres sure in trying to become only the second runner in WSSU history to reach the century mark in a single season. Chico Dunlap be came the first in 1974. When asked about the quest for a 1,000 yard season the shy runner seems almost embarrased. “Getting a thousand yards is not my goal,” he says. “My only goal is to play hard and try to help the team win. As far as the 1,000 yards, I think that will take care of itself. ” The polite young man also seemed very calm about going over the 200 yard mark for the second time in a game and gave the credit to his offensive line. “It’s a pleasure to gain 200 yards in a game be cause very few backs get a chance to do that. But the credit should go to the great job of blocking. They are young in spots but are really beginning to jell now and I have confidence in them,” he said. Newsome says he has no problems with the injuries he has suffered the past two seasons now. “I’m fine physically. Dr. Homer at Medical Park did a fine job on my knee. After the operation he told me that how the knee responded was up to me. I worked hard all summer long to get it in shape and I think it may be stronger than be fore the operation now. ’ ’ An injury kept the bruis ing runner out of the Gold Bowl last season and al though he would like to get back to the Gold Bowl in 78 he says he is not thinking about it yet, nor is he thinking about winning All- CIAA honors or NAIA All- American status. “Sure I’d like to get back to the Gold Bowl but my goal is to win the CIAA championship and after that I will take things as they come. Winning indivi dual honors is nice but as I said my only goal is to help the team win.” With the job Newsome U doing in helping the teuB win, he may earn many individual honors as a re sult of his team oriented spirit. yIS batteries FACTORY 0U1UT Sites lo fit most Domestic and Foreign Cars; Trucks;lawn Mowers, Etc. CHERRY Aggies Trounced In 4th Quarter By Robert Eller Sports Editor “I’ve been coming to A&T games for eight years and this is the first time I’ve ever heard the fans boo the team,” said one dis turbed Aggie fan as he left War Memorial Stadium last Saturday night. The South Carolina State Bulldogs has just established themselves as the team to beat in the MEAC and left North Caro lina A&T fighting an uphill battle to catch them. The Aggies were on the down side of a 34-7 final score. After a scoreless first half that was dominated by the defensive teams, the Aggies struck first. William Judson’s fumble of an A&T punt was recovered on the Bulldog 25. Two plays later Cleotis Johnson went 12 yards for the score and Jones PAT gave the Aggies their only score of the game and a short lived 7-0 lead with 11;48 left in the third quarter. The Bulldogs came back to pull within one at the 5:11 mark going 87 yards in 8 plays with quarterback Nate Rivers scoring from the one. From that point, it was all South Carolina State. They came back to go 80 yards in 7 plays on their next posession and Rivers ran for the two point con version to give the Bulldogs a 14-7 lead with 2:07 left in the third period. Jackie Reed, who gained 177 of his 181 yards in the second half, scored the touchdown on a six yard run. Reed won the Schlitz Offensive Player of the Game award. Defensive Player of the Game Bobby Moore scored to put the Bulldogs up 20-7 at the 12:04 mark of the final quarter by recovering an Aggie fumble in the end zone. The Bulldogs, sens ing a rout then, began to really pour it on moving 62 yards in 8 plays on their next posession. Rivers’ four yard keeper and Malcolm Montgo mery’s conversion made the score 27-7 with 5:18 left in the game. They added a final touchdown at the 3:37 mark after recovering an Aggie fumble at the A&T 19. Reed went 19 yards up the middle on the first play to set the final margin. The Aggie fans began booing late in the game when the Aggies, trailing by the final score, contin ued to run the ball. The Bulldog defense held the Aggies to one first down in the first half and 26 total yards on 21 plays. For the game the Aggies had 6 first downs and 97 total yards to the Bulldogs 418.
