Gaines Athletic Award was established at the school. Gaines is also in the halls of fame at Morgan State, CIAA and NAIA. A short film presentation showing Gaines working with his basketball team in the new athletic complex named after the legendary coach was shown before Gaines was presented to accept the award. In accepting he said, “I feel like I have never had a job. All my life I’ve done what I wanted to do. I feel coaching is what I was destined to do.” The Morgan State grad was all set to attend dental school when an assistant coaching job came up at WSSU in 1946 and Gaines said he has never regretted taking the position. Gaines was one of five persons inducted into the hall last week. The others were Forrest “Smokey” Burgess, an 18 year Major League veteran, who holds the record for career pinch hits with 145. Tennis great Allen Morris, former pro golfing star Johnny Palmer, and all around sports star Bob Gantt, who has been called Dixie’s Finest Athlete. Governor Jim Hunt was the guest speaker and he stressed that he would do everything in his power to see that the 16-year old hall gets a permanent home. Chances are that home will be Tanglewood Park in Winston-Salem.
