Page C2'The Chronicle, Thursday, December 22, 1983 Conduct Thorough Research Before Attending Trade And Technical Schools Trade and technical schools may be able to provide basic training for almost anyone seeking education for entrance level employment or promotions within certain levels of employment, notes the Better Business Bureau (BBB). What trade and technical schools can’t guarantee is success in any enterprise. Advertisements for .some trade and technical schools can be misleading. A diploma from one of these schools doesn’t assure even a job interview. However, a diploma from a good school may open the door to an interview which then leads to employment. First, find out about employment conditions for the business you would like to enter. You can do this by talk ing to prospective employers who hire in the field of your interest. Then read through the “Occupational Outlook Hand book,’’ available at most public libraries. The handbook lists education and training requirements for hundreds of different jobs. If you are in high school, don’t overlook the school’s guidance counsellors as you research the field. These per sons may be able to help you decide whether or not you are qualified for the technical training that you are con sidering. Seek out several schools offering the same courses. Ask for bottom line costs, whether or not the school is ac credited, how many students have graduated and how many are in jobs, and, finally, the names, addresses and phone numbers of several graduates that have attended the school. Interview these graduates and find out how satisfied they are with the training. Your Better Business Bureau may be able to helpvo find out about the school’s reliability and whether ot” there have been complaints filed against the school a”! the nature of the complaints. And, urges the BBB, never sign a school contract nmi you understand all its terms, including refund policy anj you are satisfied that the school offers what you want at" cost that you can afford to pay. ’ IN OUR 100th.
