Black On Sports i Upstart Seahawks By ROBERT ELLER c '^Sports Editor ? i It's no big surprise that the Washington Redskins and i . the San Francisco 49ers will battle it out for the National j Football Conference title and the right to go on to the Super Bowl XVIII Sunday. The Raiders were Super Bowl champs in 1980 and, with Marcus Allen continuing-to get better, they had to be one of the top picks in the AFC to reach the NFL title game. Ah, but there's a fourth team with a shot at the Super Bowl: the Seattle Seahawks. That's right, the Seattle Seahawks. I'm sure you have heard of the Seahawks before this season. 'We have played some awfully tough road games since he season began and I think the kids were just glad to be slaying^within two hundred miles of home.". _ ? The two wins upped the Aggies' season record to 4-3. In Select Company * quarterback named Jim Zorn and a glue-fingered, slow eceiver named Steve Largent. Yeah, it's the same franchise that led the league in eligion for the past five seasons but never made the ^layoffs. Well, all that has changed for the Seahawks.this year. Chuck Knox, the man who built winners in both Buffalo md Los Angeles, took over as head coach this season, rhe Seahawks also drafted*^ running back off the national championship college ^eam from a year ago. With Curt Warner making a bigger splash in the NFL than he did at Penn State and a guy named Dave Krieg taking Dver at quarterback and doing a sensational job, the Seahawks are in the AFC title game. To get that far, Krieg had to outdo a couple of rookie signakallers who got more than their share of deadlines in '83. Against Denver he had to outshine John Elway. Elway, the NFL's top draft choice in the spring draft, may have been the most publicized rookie quarterback in NFL history. Elway wasn't a smashing success, however, and the truth is, without Steve DeBerg, the Broncos would never have made the playoffs. And had DeBerg been healthy, Elway would have been on the bench. The same cannot be said of Dan Marino. Marino, looked at by many as the best quarterback in college football during his junior year, had a rough time as a senior at Pittsburgh and wasn't as highly prized as Elway at draft time. But after taking over the starffrig job at Miami from Dave Woodley, andther youngster, he was among the league's top-ranked passers. Still, Krieg and Seattle hung on to upset the Dolphins 27-20 and head to the title game. As the Seahawks enter their first AFC title game, they will face a Raider team that has encountered playoff pressure over and over again, and Jim Plunkett is no rookie. Plunkett and John Elway of Denver have one thing in common, however: both graduated from Stanford. Please see page B6 $ * ' I / The i?/isg til fTTKTTaVIiBTn L11 fil tw* IlLOTll Main Sh<v p8, C."?
