TrZar shrubs may be desirable alternatives. Agricultural Extension Service specialists at North Carolina State University point - out that you plant trees and shrubs for a windbreak just as you plant them for a noise barrier. The only difference may be location. A windbreak should face or be crossways to the prevailing winds, which usually blow from the southwest in North Carolina. A noise barrier should be planted as close to the noise source as possible. In other words, if your goal is to reduce the noise from motor <traffic, put your trees and shrubs as close to the highway as you can. You'll get more noise reduction this way than you would if the barrier is near ? the house. The objective in planting trees and shrubs for a noise o ' barrier or windbreak is to lift the noise or wind, to throw it up into the air and diffuse it. This means that you need more than one row of shrubs and trees. The first row should be dense evergreen shrubs, the second row tall evergreen trees, and the third row medium height trees. Some recommended choices of shrubs for the first row are waxmyrtle, Chinese hoi- . ly, Chinese photinia and California privet. Hemlock can also be used in the mrvuritoinc oc o cUri.W iuvuiiiuiiu uo c* viviijv 3iii uu barrier. Large size evergreen trees recommended for the second row are loblolly pine, slash pine, longleaf pine, and in the mountains, hemlock and white pine. Choices of medium height evergreen trees for the third row include red cedar, Arizona cypress, American holly, Virginia pine, Southern bayberry, Southern magnolia, hemlock and white pine. Evergreen shrubs in the first row facing the prevailing wind should be spaced six feet apart. The tall evergreen trees in the se^ cond row and the medium height evergreen trees in the third row should planted eight feet apart. The three rows of shrubs and trees should be eight feet apart. Make sure trees in each* row are staggered with the trees in the adjacent row. Seedlings of red cedar, Arizona cypress and white, ^ Virginia, loblolly, slash and longleaf pines are usually available from nurseries of the N.C. Forest Service. Other recommended trees and shrubs may be purchased from private nurseries. Incidentally, a windbreak will reduce the wind over an area of about 10 times the height of the tallest trees in the windbreak. Plants are a good way to fill up empty spaces while you are still saving for that special piece of furniture. Remember that all goods on sale are not being offered at a lower price. Some sales introduce new, higher-priced goods. Plan an occasional fun meaT which can be cooked at the table. Fondue, tempura and quick-fry dishes can adda an out-of-the ordinary touch. *
