Parky Grace
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIKIIIIUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHIIIII
Ross Grace has admitted that he shot
Morgan, and that his brother had nothing
to do with the slaying. But since Jan. 24,
1974, Parky Grace has been behind bars. ^
The U.S. Justice Department, the New .
Bedford Police Department and thejocal
'district attorney all know Grace is inno- .
cent. But the reason for tvis continuing
punishment is political.
At Walpole State Prison in
Massachusetts, he was active in a black
prisoners' caucus. In the mid-1970s, he
was an advisor with the National Prisoner
V.T""* 'Rights Association, which lobbied' for
humane reforms inside prisons. When
Grace worked with several sympathetic
college professors and the American
Friends Service Committee to offer college
courses and self-awareness
workshops, penal authorises were alarm.iHimMMiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiimiimitiiiiiiiiiiiimiiimiiiiiiiiiiHiMiiiiiiiiii

detention at Point Salines as "primitive"
and "beneath ''the standards as's^t by the

released, the victims were given identification
bands by American soldiers as well as
green cards with the following message:
"The individual has been released and
directed to refrain from participation in
anti-government activities. Unless this individual
participates in restricted activities

apprehended, as further questioning has
not been deemed necessary at this time."

Boycott From Page /

met with Food Lion officials and the
boycott would be forthcoming. "I would
hope the Food Lion people would have
the decency, courage and good sense to sit
and talk with the oldest civil rights
organization in this country," said
Hooks, who got that wish late Thursday
afternoon.
Food Lion's refusal to talk to the
NAACP, Hooks said, was one reason the
boycott was considered.
The NAACP announced in late
December that Food Lion was being
targeted because onlybne of its 230 stores
is managed by a black person (the store in
the East Winston Shopping Center). The
NAACP also contended that Food Lion
does not conduct an appropriate share of
business with black-owned banks, construction
companies, insurance companies
and vendors and that blacks and

Barriers lo Burglary r
-- Start your prevention program from the
outside and work your way in.
- Don't use stockade fencing. If a burglar
gets inside, it provides perfect shielding.
-- Do use picket fences or chain-link
fences so everything can be clearly seen by
neighbors.
- Don't surround your property wirh tall,
dense bushes.
- Keep planted hedges no more than
waist-high. Prickly or thorny bushes can
help keep trespassers out.
r-\? t. i .
-- uun i leave ladders, or anything that
could be used as a ladder, or tools within
reach.
-- If trees are close to a building, keep
low-hanging limbs trimmed. Burglars can
climb trees to enter from an upper level or
roof.

ed. Grace was sent to Memphis, and four
other prisoners who were involved in his
constructive projects were transferred to
other federal penitentiaries.
Despite tKe^beatings, the torture and
the injustice of hisTiftprisonment, Parky

the continued legal battle to vindicate
Parky Grace.
His ordeal is, in no small way, the
political battle for justice for all of the op

Although these practices have stopped,
they have not been repudiated. And,
although some of these practices have
ceased, there has yet to be a full account'
of the necessity or legitimacy of these acts
by American forces. In addition, these actions
were directed not only at Grenadians,
but also at Americans and other
foreign nationals who were lawfully and
peacefully in Grenada.
Such actions make a mockery of our
stated intention to establish and maintain p
political democracy in Grenada.

among its management personnel.
Food Lion officials have contended
that the NAACP's facts are misleading
and inaccurate.
Although the local NAACP planned to
comply with the boycott, not everyone in
Winston-Salem felt the same.
The Baptist Ministers Conference and
Associates voted last week at its regular
meeting not to take a stance on the proposed
boycott. The ministers said they
feared that the Food Lion store in the
East Winston Shopping Center, the only
store with a black manager, would suffer
and in turn cause the shopping center to
suffer.
"We fought so hard to get that shopping
center here in East Winston," Bishop
R.K. Hash, chairman of the group of
black ministers, said last week.
If there had to be a boycott, the group
added, the East Winston store should be
excluded.
