Pierce Jr., left, accepted the Martin Luther King Jr. Special Award from Mrs. Coretta Scott King at an annual awards breakfast sponsored by the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolence Social Change Inc. The Special Award honors those who have made outstanding contributions to the “enhancement of social justice and social responsibility in the tradition and spirit of Martin Luther King Jr.,” and to improving the working relationship among government, labor and management. King Senior Citizens Center elects officers The Marlin Luther King Jr. Senior Citizens elected new officers for the year. Mrs. C.reola Mockey was elected president of the organization. Other officers elected were Evelyn Carter, vice president; Marian Wallace, recording secretary; Janie Brown, financial' secretary; Minnie Shoffner, treasurer; Odessa Perry, assistant treasurer; Queenie Sally, chaplain; Janie Thomas, reporter; and Esiella Flics, cor respondence. The commit tees are Mrs. Fries, chairperson of the sick committee, with Mabel Banks and Ester Nelson as members; Cora Broome, chairperson of the hospitality committee, with Bessie Davis, Magnola Col eman and Janie Brown as members; and Evelyn Carter, chairperson of the program committee, with Alberta Burnell and Sindy Lindsey as members. Rowan plays at WSSU Ann Woodward and Bar bara Rowan will be in con cert at Winston-Salem State University on Thursday, Feb. 2, at 3 p.ni. in Room 111 of the Fine Arts Building. The Woodward and Rowan concerts are part of the Lyceum Cultural events series. The program will be formal and the artist will talk and explain during the concerts. Woodward is a virtuoso recitalist, chamber musician and soloist with orchestra. She has performed in many cultural centers of Europe and North America in cluding Carnegie Recital Hail in New York and Wigmore Hall in London where her playing received critical acclaim. The artist is professor of music and chairman of str ing instruction at the Univerist y of Nort h Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a graduate of the , Curtis Institute of Music I where she studied with Max Aronoff, and .was a first recipient of the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Yale School of Music where she was a student of David Schwartz. She has also been awarded grams for study in France with Club holds banquet The Marian Anderson Club of the YWCA held its ' Christmas dinner and ban quet at the Holiday Inn North. All the club members and their guests attended the meeting and the Rev. Robert H. Bailey was the guest speaker. Dur ing the banquet, gifts were exchanged. Barbara Rowan is an ac tive performer of both chamber music and the solo repertoire for, piano. Although North Carolina has been her musical home since 1964, she has played widely on the East Coast from Florida to Boston as well as California where she received her education at Mills College under Egon Petri, Darius Milhaud, Leon Kirchner and Alex ander Liehermann. She has been a Fulbright Scholar in Paris and has performed with the San Francisco, Oakland, and North Carolina symphonies. Clarke, son of Raquel Clarke of Cloister Drive, has completed recruit train ing at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. During the 11-week train ing cycle, he learned the basics of battlefield sur vival. He was introducted to the typical daily routine that he will experience dur ing his enlistment and studied the personal and professional standards traditionally exhibited by Marines. He participated in an ac tive physical conditioning program and gained profi ciency in a variety of military skills, including first aid, rifle marksman ship and close-order drill. Teamwork and self- discipline were emphasized throughout the training cy cle. Navy Lt. J.g. Kenneth D. Dunn, whose wife, Catherine, is the daughter of Jean M. and Julian C. Burroughs of Faculty Drive, has been awarded the Navy Achievement Medal. He received the decora tion for superior perfor mance of duty while serving aboard the USS Sam Rayburn, which is homeported in New Lon don, Conn. The medal is an official recognition of an in dividuals outstanding ac complishments and is presented during formal ceremonies. Navy Seaman Carl. L. Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dewhitt Raleigh of Morningside Drive, has completed recruit training at the Naval Training Center in Orlando, Fla. During the eight-week training cycle, trainees studied general military subjects designed to prepare them for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy’s 85 basic occupational fields. Included in their studies were seamanship, close- order drill, naval history and first aid. Personnel who complete this course of instruction are eligible for three hours of college credit in physical education and hygiene.
