Hutchins Case HMIIMMMMIMUMIIHIUIIIIIHIIUMIittlMIIIIMIIUtMIHMUMIMUMilllllMM Over the years, we*have seen millions of human beings killed by governments in the name of justice, freedom, war, prevention of war, retribution, prevention of murder, racial purity, whim, show of power, political control, religious conformity, order and law. We have seen millions of human beings killed by other human beings for all sorts of silly reasons and sometimes for no reason at all. This second, while you are reading this editorial, somewhere in this troubled world, somebody is being murdered in cold or warm blood by private killer or public^iller, and the killHunger report IMIttlMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHIIttllllllKIIIUIIIIUIIIIIIMlllllllHIIHnilllHIM The record of existing block grant pro< grams contains nothing that would inspire confidence in the states* ability to meet national social needs through state-run block grants. Instead of federal standards and oversight control, there coul^ be 50 food programs run by the 50 states, all with different eligibility requirements and ail with different payment formulas. The killing goes on. It is ironic that it should so often be at the hands of human beings who profess to believe in the precept, "Thou shalt not kill." That Hutchins was set to be killed on Friday, the 13th, the unholy day of the superstitious, made Hutchins' execution TO less a cruel jolce on an already too cruel sociey. After receiving a stay, he faces a March date with death, unless something unforeseen happens. The whole death penalty process has become a tragedy of errors.
