1. In 1791, I served as assistant to Major Andrew
Elliott, the surveyor appointed by President George
Washington to lay out the boundaries of the District
of Columbia.
2. In 1973, I became the first Black mayor of Los
Angeles.
3. My writings, "Notes of a Native Son (1955) and
"Nobody Knows My Name," are autobiographical
essays.
