And, while Hayes admits that this spr- v ing's practice will not be as hectic as last V year's, he still has some major goals in s mind. "We will be looking at our linebacker t play and trying to improve in that area," i he says, "and we will spend a lot of time < witn kids who will be changing position as ] we try to find replacements for our graduating offensive linemen." All-CIAA picks Alvin Powell and John Nimmons both completed their eligibility last season so Hayes hopes to find veterans who can fill the void by shifting them from positions not hit as hard bygraduation. "We plan to move Keith Holland from defensive tackle to right guard," says Hayes of the 6-3, 275-pound WinstonSalem native. "I've been talking to him about it for quite a while and he seems ready to accept the challenge." Hayes also plans to shift 6-4, 280-pound Jerry Maynard, who was redshirted last season, to right tackle. Julius Sampson, at 6-0, 235, played linebacker last season but Hayes will move him to guard, too. Hayes says he's having little trouble convincing players to try their hand at the offensive line spots because of the type of offense the Rams run and the success of Powell. "Alvin's getting drafted and becoming a starter (for the USFL's Oklahoma Outlaws) and the fact that, in the wing-T off(-hfcVu, iuwiinn> arrl u> WSSU football By ROBERT ELLER Sports Editor Last year, WSSU football Coach Bill Hayes ended his spring practice with the first-ever Alumni Game, pitting his team against a group of former players. This year, there's a new wrinkle to the April football weekend. In addition to the second annual alumni affair, set for April 28 at 7 p.m. at Bowman Gray Stadium, Hayes will hold a coaching clinic. The clinic, which will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 27, will feature a number of area collegiate coaches, as well as one pro assistant. On Friday night at 6 p.m., Wake Forest Head Coach A1 Groh will open the clinic. The 7 p.m. speaker will be Ed Emory, head coach at East Carolina, who will discuss "Winning the Pirate Way." He will be followed by Howard University Head Coach Willie Jeffries, whose 1984 mm fefel $ 5 || 1^^ "** x. 1*-^ J^i.-**?"* m Mm M x ^mJZXs?2m.*< b?l?|OEPlr*f^ ^ ' i t i ? liflf ' " p< victory in a relay for Mt. "W e will work with Mike Winbush and vith freshman Darryl Hall, who hurt his ;nee last year prior to the season," he * , * ays. . Hayes says he also wants to work with wo running backs who he hopes will add nore depth to that spot next year. Mark Cullen came in the second semester and Hayes wants to familiarize him with the wing-T. Harold Hairston, a sometimestarter in '82, is also back in school and Hayes wants to give him some work as well. But the Rams have no intention of putting more plays into their offense, says their coach. "We didn't use all the plays we had last year," Hayes says, adding, u..iaiii : ? wc ii jum wuik uii our power game ana hanging on to the ball." The Rams committed some costly fumbles in their own territory last season. Hayes says he will also work with returning punter Vince Jones and will search for a placekicker. Finally, Hayes has announced the signing of another top prep star from the area. Vernard Dillard, a 6-3, 260-pound offensive lineman who played for North Forsyth, has decided to join the Rams. Dillard was recruited by such Division 1 schools as UCLA, Georgia, Clemson, Wake Forest, North Carolina State and Georgia Tech. "Vernard has the size, and he runs a 4.8 40," says Hayes. "I expect him to see a lot of action next season even though the offensive line is probably the most difclinic slated talk will cover "The Pro-I option Offense." Jim LaRue, defensive secondary coach for the Chicago Bears, will be the 9 p.m. speaker, and will discuss the techniques of defensive secondary coverage. Saturday morning's session will begin with registration at 8 a.m. and will feature among its speakers East Carolina Offensive Coordinator Don Murray, former WSSU tight end Johnny Rogers, now an assistant coach at North Carolina State; WSSU Defensive Coordinator Pete Richardson and WSSU Offensive Backfield Coach David Sheppard. Hayes will conclude the session at 3 p.m., when he discusses the Rams' successful transition from the veer offense to the wing-T. All sessions are set for the Communications Building on the Winston-Salem State campus. "We are at least a year away from reaching our potenal," he says. "We have one senior and one junior on the am and next year we should be in our prime." That has to be bad news for C1AA and District 26 oponents who are finding that this "year-away" team may e the one to beat right now.
