But only two had a chance to advance to quarterfinal action as three of them were tossed into the fray in the South Atlantic Regionals. Norfolk State, ranked number one in the nation in the final regular season poll after rolling to a 28-1 record and the CIAA title, was tabbed to host the regional, but looked around to see pesky Winston-Salem State, a team it had barelv saueaked bv twice and Virginia Union, the team that handed I Norfolk its only defeat of the season, standing between it and a shot at the quarterfinal^ St. Augustine's Heartbreak Kids, losers to the Spartans in the conference tourney title game, also qualified for playoff action, but were lucky enough to avoid their conference rivals by being sent to the East Regional in Erie, Pa. By the time the last ball had bounced on Feb. 24 in Springfield, Mass., the C1AA had come very close to claiming j another NCAA title (Virginia Union I won the crown in 1981 while WSSU was a winner in 1967), but close was not enough as the St. Augustine's fell to Central Missouri State in the title game, 81-77. There were some good basketball played en Toute to Springfield, however, and CIAA clubs were involved in more than their share of it. Only WSSU failed to get into the win | column in tourney action as the Rams were knocked off by Norfolk 70-61 in first-round action and then beaten by Randolph-Macon (a 45-30 loser to Virginia Union in the opening round) in the consolation game, 69-54. Thus, WSSU's "Bighouse" Gaines might have had reason to be the most displeased of the CIAA coaches who made the NCAAs.
