By Saturday, the pain had intensified. On Monday, June 18, Jackie consulted Dr. Stephen Lombardo, orthopedist for the Los Angeles Lakers and L.A. Kings. Lombardo arranged to have Jackson admitted to L.A.'s Centinella Hospital on a rush basis. At first, the remaining Jacksons -- Marlon, Tito, Randy, Jer maine and Michael ? contemplated postponing the opening date of their tour until Jackie would be able to perform with the group. Jackie, after all, is the oldest of the Jackson brothers. He also has played a key role in the organization of the Victory Tour, and is one of the primary creators of the tour's choreography. On June 20, Jackie underwent surgery for the removal of a piece of dead bone floating in the tissue near his knee. According to Dr. Lobardo, the knee problem, known technically as Osteochondritis Dessecans, will sideline Jackie "indefinitely." In fact, Jackson will be unable to perform for a minimum of three to six months. Lombardo explained that he will not be able to determine more specifically what the rate of healing has been and when Jackie will become fully functional again until September. Meanwhile, Jackie asked that his brothers continue the Victory Tour without him. And his brothers, who say they feel a profound sense of commitment to their audience, agreed. Said Marlon Jackie. "When we go on that stage, we'll be performing not only for our fans. We'll be performing for Jackie." More 'Victory* Notes... Explains Tito, "We're sending someone into each city to talk with the mayor and find a charity that's doing a really good job. Then we'll give the tickets to that charity's kids."
