Parkland, under Coach Homer Thompson, is chock full of talented players. The Mustangs seniors benefitted from postseason play last year when they advanced to the 4-A Division 11 championships, narrowly losing to Wilmington Hanover. "We've got some good returning seniors and some juniors coming in that can help us," says Thompson. "We're revamping our offensive line, which was depleted by graduaticfn, and that's our biggest concern at this time/' Still, the Mustangs have a host of experienced players at the skill positions and their three leading ballcarriers from the 1983 season return. Heading the list , is allconference and all-city/county tailback Donald Jackson. The 5-10, 200-pound senior rushed for more than 1,000 yards as a junior. "We expect Donald to do the same type of things he did for us last year," says Thompson. "He's a college prospect and a good season from him will not only help the team but also bring him some individual awards. 1 think he will accomplish a lot this season." Parkland's other starting running backs in '83, Anthony Wardlow and massive Joel Cole, provide the Mustangs with an expiokivfi, powe*iw4r inside Tuiwier^wliife Wardifcm Jm ?feood speed and can also catch the ball out of the backfield. If that isn't enough, the Mustangs have added two of the top runners from 9-10 football last year, Kennard Martin and Cassanova Hickman. Fullback * % * . t a . Keggie Moore gives me Mustangs a strong second-team backfield. Parkland also has Bobby^ Scrivens, who will see action at tight end and Shelton Jones, who will start in the defensive secondary. Both Scrivens and Jones received considerable playing time in the Mustang backfield last year. The quarterback position is where the Mustangs will encounter their major worry. Senior Jeff Pace and junior Tony Cnvinctnn are currentlv snlittintz time, with Pace the likely starter. Though Thompson says the Mustangs will try to throw more this season, Parkland will be a run-oriented team. Along the line, Parkland lost a lot of size and experience. "Tray Thacker and Mark Crater have both started for us," says Thompson. "The others have played some, but, for the most part, are inexperienced. "Our situation this vear offen sively is almost the reverse of what we had last year," he saysT^ "Last year, our line was what carried us through the first part of the season, and this year we expect the backfield to do a good job until the line comes around." As in most instances at the start of the seasont the defense is ahead of the offense. On that sid^ of the ledger, Parkland is very experienced. "Our defense is pretty solid," says Thompson. "(Jacques) Holladay, (Derrick) McCorkle and Thacker will anchor our defensive line. We think our linebackers (Scrivens and 6-2, 225-pound David Fenner) are also going to be strong." In the secondary, Jones and Wardlow both started a year ago and Chris Acker saw action as a reserve. The only other hole the Mustangs will have to fill is in their kicking game.
