The Best Yet Flower and
Garden Club hefd its first
meeting of the~season on Sunday"
at the home of Mrs. Mildred
Truesdale on Cumberland Road.
The meeting was called to
order by Mrs. Elsie Blackman,
outgoing club president. The
Lord's Prayer was recited in
unison and final remarks were
given by Mrs. Blackman. She expressed
her appreciation for good
cooperation during her four years
as president.
i New officers were installed by
* Mrs. Blackman. The officers are
Virginia Stewart, president;
France^ Bowen, vice president;
Janet Warren, secretary; Sallie
Clyburn, financial secretary;
Selena Nichols, treasurer; Earle
Simpson, parliamentarian; Mary
Clanton, contact person, and
Magdalene Watson, reporter.
A report was given by Elsie
Blackman, the club's delegate to
the state convention held in
August, on helpful tips gathered
at the convention. As a moneymaking
project, the club discussed
collecting cans, newspapers
and old magazines. Each person
was also asked to bring flowers
and plants for exhibits at the
county fair.
Mrs. Elsworth Banner was present
at the club's first meeting
and presented a mini-flower
workshop. Topics Mrs. Banner
discussed included:
making sure to use extremely
clean clay pots to display plants
at the fair:
the importance of not using
anything artificial for making
plants shine. Instead, she suggested
rubbing the plants with the
fingertips to get a gloss and
removing all dead leaves and
stems to make the plants more attractive
for showing;
rotating full plants in order for
them to get adequate sunlight;
put only one specimen in a
display bottle or jar and to be
sure the flowers meet the height
requirements;
Mrs. Banner, a retired art
teacher from the city-county
school system, demonstrated and
displayed a variety of flower arrangements
before ending the
?
worxsnop.

I
The new president, Mrs.
Virginia Stewart said she was going
to hold numerous other
workshops throughout the year.
She appointed the following people
