get the rezoning before they
spend money to design a plan.
So far, said Grubbs, the
developers, represented by
Burnett and Donathan but actually
a group of six heirs, have
indicated they want to build 651
units on 90 acres of land. The
land borders the Castleshire
Woods development.
VV hen the developers met with
residents from Castleshire Woods
and surrounding neighborhoods
on Sept. 2 at Crews United
Methodist Church, Marshall and
Holmes said they could not
answer specific questions about
the proposed complex.
"We asked about swimming
pools and club houses and they
couldn't answer any questions,"
Marshall said. "If you say you
are building a development to at?
trat i middle class working people,
you got to have some
amenities like swimming pools,
and he says he is not offering that
out here.
"You need a lot of amenities in
- this area, because it's hard to sell
because most people identify it
with being black," Marshall said.
The developers, Holmes said,
are the same group that built the
Sherwood Oaks condominiums
on Robinhood Road, a complex
that includes many of the
amenities Holmes said should be
included in the U.S. 158 development.

"He (Donathan) said he helped
develop that complex," said
Holmes. "But, when we asked
him if these (the U.S. 158 apartments
and condominiums) would
include the same amenities, ^he
said 'No.' We then asked him
why he wasn't consistent.
"He (Donathan) said he has
great visions for this area, but his
plan didn't reflect the great visions
he has," Holmes added.
Holmes said he also questioned
Donathan about widening the
two-lane road that would serve as
an access to the development, as
well as to Castleshire Woods. But
the developer said he had no
specific plans to change the
roads, Holmes said, and
Donathan said any changes in the
road system would be the responsibility
of the city.
Marshall said he's not sure
how far the residents will go to
oppose the project, but in 1979 a
group of Castleshire Woods
residents filed suit against a

Helen Edmunds, a professor
emeritus at North Carolina Central

Central's board of trustees, is one
of them, she said.
Because this year has been one
of exceptional female achievement,
Newell said, the number of
applications from women in
North Carolina and across the
country should increase and
women should be seriously considered
for the job.

According to the Rev. Lorenzo
Lynch, pastor of White Rock
Baptist Church in Durham and
the chairman of an ad hoc committee
which tried to play a role
in the search for an NCCU
chancellor, only one woman was
considered seriously for the job
and she withdrew her name from
consideration.
4 'Women ought to be considered
as serious candidates/'
Lynch said. "Our (NCCU's)
search was too much of a male
search, by males, for males - the
same way the country is run."
To many others, speculation
about the next chancellor is
premature, since no search committee
to find the successor to Dr.
H. Douglas Covington has been
formed yet.
