The Vikings, coming off a week's layoff after defeating Person County 35-14 in the first game of the season, were never really able to get untracked against Hickory, which came into the contest hungry after an 0-2 start. *& '.^'^i^I ^^9?k 1 ^z .39 ^HL ' 99 Hickory quarterback Andy Mack noseguard Keith Richardson. " - North Forsyth Coach Bob Sapp "When we came back from the layoff, the intensity just wasn't there," he said. "We had things clicking in our first game, but tonight we never could get it going." North got on the scoreboard first, getting a school-record 48-yard field goal from Ben Hill late in the first quarter. Hill's kick easily cleared the crossbars, with a few yards to spare. However, Hickory came back to even the score on a 39-yard field goal by Kent Rhoney. Hickory's tying field goal was set up by a 42-yard kickoff return by Dante Rhyne, plus a 15-yard personal foul penalty that moved the ball to North's 36-yard line. North looked as if would take a commanding lead before halftime by putting another score on the board, bolting to the Hickory 22-yard line. However, after the drive bogged down, Hill's 36-yard field goal attempt on fourth down was blocked by Hickory linebacker Charles Ikard. In the second half. Hickorv's size took its toll on the Vikings. Hickory shut down North on its initial possession of the second half and then marched 43 yards to tie the score at 10, after an apparent 74-yard punt return for a touchdown by Kevin Carlton was nullified. The game was delayed for about five minutes as the officials tried to make a ruling on Carlton's punt return. Hill's 54-yard punt had been touched by a North player on Hickory's 26-yard line. However, the ball was not ruled dead.
