There are just a variety of things that I would like to try. "Every day is a new challenge for me," Black says. "I want to make the right decisions about things and continue to do what I think is right for me.". For Black, making the right decisions about the future and excelling have never been a problem. For most of his young life, he has stood in the limelight, both academically and athletically. "I learned to read when I was 4 years old and, since that time, it's never really been unusual for me to sit down and read a book or study," he says of the need to nurture his intellectual growth. "I was like a know-it-all when I was growing up. I always wanted to know more than other people." Similarly, Black says he had a desire to outshine % both his teammates and opponents from the first day he picked up a football. "My father bouaht me a football when I was about 4 or 5 years old," he says. "Since then, I always loved to play football. My brother (Perrin) and I would play football together and, on Sundays, we would sit and watch football all day." By the time he was 10 years old, Black had begun to play organized football. Despite his relatively small frame (5-9, 165 pounds) Black had an excellent career in high ov< school football. As a junior at East Forsyth, he started in the defensive backfield and at wingback. Prc Before being injured, Black was a mainstay on the team that was 7-0 and ranked first in state 4-A com petition before injuries struck. inj As a senior, Black continued to improve; up however, the team stumbled to a 4-5-1 record. Still, Black started at tailback and snared 15 intercep- wl tions as a defensive back. fe< Not surprisingly, several major-college powers or recruited him. I A Jnlike many athletes contemplating collegiate eers, Black had another option: to attend college < an academic scholarship. Shortly after being ofed a football scholarship by UNC, he was inmed that he had won a scholarship from the stigious Morehead Foundation to enter the iversity on an academic grant. ^ While Black says accepting the Morehead award :r a football scholarhip was rewarding in terms his intellectual growth, it did present its share of >blems. Those problems aside, Black says playing football at Chapel Hill had its share of rewards. "My first two years there were the most rewarding," he says.44My sophomore season I had six interceptions, blocked two field goals and had a lot of other big plays in crucial situations. 1 was pretty certain that 1 would make the all-ACC team." Although he wasn't selected to the team, Black says he felt he should have made it. "I know that I played well enough to make it," he says. "But things just didn't work out that way." Equally as disappointing for Black was the fact that, after starting as a sophomore and junior, he was relegated to just being a punt returner his senior season.
