Page B8-The Chronicle, Thursday, September 2 Focus On Religion Y oung preaci By ALBERT NICKERSON Chronicle Staff Writer The Rev. Kevin Hinson preached his first sermon titled "He Abides In Me" five years ago ? when he was 11 years old. "I received a revelation from God and followed my vision," said Hinson, a junior at North Forsyth High School. After the revelation, he preached his maiden sermon at Macedonia Holiness Church. Hinson said some young people question his faith, but most people respect him for his convictions. "It is mostly young people who are my age who don't believe," said Hinson, who preaches every fifth Sunday on Youth Day. "Most of the older people respect me." Despite his youth, Hinson said he still is able to counsel other young people. "When I talk to other young people, I talk about things that 1 know about based on my knowledge," the 16-year-old minister said. Hinson also helps counsel students in the Youth Outreach program at Gospel Tabernacle Holiness Church on Greenwood Avenue. The program is for young people who come from single-parent homes and may need counseling for drug and alcohol abuse. The youngsters rap about personal hygiene, peer group pressure and academic performance. "It's for the enrichment of their minds and to make them more aware of their community," said Hinson. "There are many material things they can take away from you, but not education. The knowledge is there for you to partake in. If you miss a chance, there may not be another.
