? Brown From Page A4 | for fact that in 1980, Myers was busy embarrassing Hooks and the NAACP by doing, represented as an official of that j group, what he so distastefully does now for white newspapers. He said four years ago: * There is no defense of either a 'white* or a 'black* school except in the context of an undemocratic, racist society. Separate schools cannot be 'equal.' Black and white SChOOlS cannot be mnrallv r?r - ?V legally justifiable.*' Of course* no one was making a case for separate schools. The movement to preserve black col- j leges was a part of a broader move to graduate more blacks from college. This included, of course, more blacks on white campuses. Segregation was never the issue and the courts upheld this position in the Adams case. Moreover, Congress has since made Black College Day a national observance. Four years later, the unemployed pariah of the black community returns beating the same dead horse. In the space provided by the Daily News, he says that blacks attending black colleges are being sold "racial chauvinism" and by "marching and singing for black college survival" (he was referring to Black College Day), they "openly denounce integration ..." He is consumed with "integration." One wonders why, with all the integration around, he is not integrated into Wall Street, the New York Daily News, Notre Dame for Catholics or Yeshiva for Jews. \ And, of course, he will call each of these bastions of power for WASPs. Catholics and Jews "integrated" because they are white. So he is really consumed with being with white people. He and the defrocked Miss America? also have that in common. At lejMt, you would expect a good colored like Myers to at least work for somebody white. Black colleges are, he continues, "relics of the segregation years without a unique or compelling educational mission." These schools alone are responsible for graduating over half of all blacks from college each year, while only 20 percent of blacks attend them. The 114 black schools graduate more blacks than 3,000 white ones. That's not a "unique" role? He attacks civil rights leaders and graduates of black colleges for supporting the schools that made their success possible. "In tegration can-work, if triedr" he asserts. Myers and people like Myers, black and white, are ignorant of the facts and the reality of a free, pluralistic society. A quality education, not race, is the civil rights issue here. Dr. W.E.B. DuBois, a founder of the NAACP, reminded us that the black child "needs neither segregated schools nor mixed _ schools. What he needs is educa. -^on." ? The National Organization of Black College Alumni, Inc., is identifying alumni from all of the 114 colleges. It is also spreading details for implementation of the annual Black College Day. Answer white racism as practiced by blacks and defend and build what is our birthright - as all other groups do.
