Although the San Diego
Padres burst the bubble of
Chicago's Cubs in the National
League playoffs to earn a place in
the World Series, and Tony
Gwynn continued his torrid hitting,
the Most Valuable Player
award in the National League is
still going to go to the Cubs' second
baseman, Ryne Sandberg.
The award hasn't been
presented yet, but if 1 were a bet
ting man, my money would De on
Sandberg.
For some strange reason, the
national media have a penchant
for promoting whites for top billing
in the major professional
sports (baseball, football and
baseball) and robbing blacks who
have equally successful, if not
better, years.
Look at what happened to Eddie
Murray of the Baltimore
Orioles last year. Murray was
clearly the top offensive producer
for Baltimore, as he has been for
the past four years, but the
American League MVP award
was given to teammate Cal
Ripken Jr.

But baseball isn't the only pror
fessional sport where racism has
reared its ugly head in selecting
an MVP.
Last spring,. Larry Bird of the
Boston Celtics earned the National
Basketball Association's
MVP for his role in the Celtics'
championship season. No one
gave Bernard King of the New
York Knicks any consideration
for the award.
King was almost singlehandedly
responsible for the
Knicks' resurgence and almost

white stars
tionale for Bird winning the
award was based on the fact that
his team won the NBA championship.
Thus, we go back to the case of
Sandberg, who will probably
become the MVP of the National
League, though his team has no
chance of winning the World
Series. He's a shoo-in.
Whatever happened to Tony
Gwynn, San Diego's leagueleading
hitter, who has been an
integral part of his team's success
this season0 Gwynn finished the
season batting over .350 and performed
admirably in the Padres'
come-from-behind playoff win
over Chicago. Quite ironically, in
the fifth and deciding game of the
series, Gwynn knocked in the
winning run for the Padres on a
play in which Sandberg couldn't
field the ball off Gwynn's bat.
The situation with the MVP
awards is just a microcosm of
what's going on in the world of
sports today. The media look for
white heroes who can be pushed
on the American public at the expense
of blacks who have equal
or even greater skills.
