The cause of lupus is unknown, h affects men, women and children of all ages and races. There are quite a number of black persons with the disease, although women of childbearing age are more affected. Almost one million Americans and about 25,000 North Carolinians are diagnosed with lupus. One person dies of lupus each 105 minutes. Vickie Hairston is a remarkable and courageous young mother. She has found an agency in Winston-Salem which has been of great help to her, the Winston-Salem Lupus Chapter of the N.C. Lupus Foundation. It is a non-profit organization operated by volunteers, many of whom have the disease themselves. Mrs. Ruth Banbury, president of the Winston-Salem Lupus Chapter, said. Hairston said. *1 feel that I have been so blessed when 1 look at other lupus patients who are completely disabled. They are an inspiration to me. More people could be helped by coming to the meetings and meeting other lupus patients. 1 try to call as many of then as I know of just to try to talk them through it. It's a drastic and unpredietible disease that will drive you insane if you let it."
