Balance our emotional and intellectual lives The Chronicle, Thursday, November 15, 1984-Page A5 The head and the heart, the in- and the emot.ons have ^ dhtful places in our lives, '' 4 at the expense of the - are likely to tecome cdd, self-satisfied and ^“Jn'heTmtional is put above Jintellectual, there is danger of ^loping foolish ideas. We need to be practical, we need to be balanced, developing mind and heart. Upon such facts, it will be easier to deal realistical ly with conditions and situations as they present themselves, holding fast to our ideals. It should be realized and understood that a person will never be able to live a life of satisfaction if he desires to live wholly by sense and sight, no matter how many intellectual points are included. It is important to realize we need to make room for the human, personal aspects, in cluding intellect and emotions having their rightful places in our lives. It is important to handle both in a controlled manner because they are needed to make a full life. Everyone, if he desires to do so, can order his own thinking and acting in ways that promote human aspects. Divine imagina tion and thinking can lead to facts which are important in making a person realize life is an important challenge. The important issues are to guard the intellect and emotional points, so they may be regarded as valuable in our lives. YUBllufSV LOWER MON.-FR!. S A.M.-6 P.M. Said bond supporter Tom Eli jah, director of the Winston- Salem Urban League : “The jobs have not happened yet, but con struction will bring on the jobs. With the development of Superblock, the convention center and the industrial park, we will be looking for people to get the jobs.” The reason many black bond opponents disapproved of the bond package was because it lacked what they considered to be the city’s main priority - hous ing. But, by law, bonds cannot finance housing. In what appeared to be a response to those concerns, a group of bankers made an 11th- hour pledge to help finance new housing with low-interest loans on the eve of the bond referen dum. “Where are the bankers now?” said Newell. “I want to know where they are? I want to see tangible evidence of this kind of thing. We have a serious pro blem with housing.” Losing your memory? Remember 10% off SHI First Touch'Static Controi Computer Pads. Bishop Tutu fights for us all From Page A4 speak of disagreement by in dividuals or groups with their rulers. These histories also in dicate the punishment that the rulers meted out to the dissenters. There are many martyrs to be found in these tales. Both in an- dent Greece and Rome, there are contless stories of individuals and groups that opposed the behavior of the ruling class. And here, too, the histories are inundated with martyrs. In Christian times, the most shining example is the oudfixion and martyrdom of JesusChrist. What the Nobel Peace Prize committee has done, at a time when it is sorely needed, is to demonstrate clearly that they recognize those who are prepared to lay-on the line their selfish comforts and even their lives to ensure that all of us live in a bet ter and more humane world. There are many dissidents in South Africa and elsewhere who could just as easily have qualified for this prize. Many have paid heavier than Tutu and Walesa. The prize, therefore, as Bishop Tutu has so clearly indicated, is an award to everyone that refuses to cower to unjust laws. In 1960, when another black South African, Chief Albert Luthuli, won the prize, the world saw this as a sign that the apar theid regime may take cognizance of the fact that civilized people everywhere abhorred the vicious system of racism practiced, by; that regime. Encouraged by capitalists in Western countries that care more for profits than human rights, the South African regime has behav ed even more barbarously over the past 24 years. No doubt the regime will once again ignore the civilized world’s opinion. MlHimtiiiiitfiimiiiiiiMniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii But here is the chance that for all of us who believe in the noble tradition of dissent to do everything in our power to ensure that Bishop Tutu’s valiant work does not go wasted. Let us make sure that the next time a South African wins this prize, it will be because he or she contributed to the success of a non-racial society.
