So they did something about it. 1 ast Saturday, Erica Smith, Marice Caesar, I rina Moore and Dorn Wilkins hosted a Christmas parts tor more than 50 elderly residents of Sunrise Towers. " ? Erica Smith not for them, we would not be here." says Erica Smith, a 13-year-old eighth-grader at Kennedy Middle School. The quartet, also known as the MJ Team (MJ stands for Michael Jackson) came up with the idea one night last summer at a pajama party at Trina M nore\ hmnip They saw a program that discussed how older people are mistreated, then got together and organized the party. They also saw on TV that, in Japan, older people are respected, says Jeannette A1-Kj iasKv % ^L' 1 wS j^fp ** ~v Hanes Group w community se during the NA mVI Freedom Func B Jan. 10. "We just wanted the older people to know how we feel, and they seemed like nice people, so we planned this party," says Erica. "Plus, they are _ ** memoers 01 our community.'' Two months ago, the girls decided to sell candy at school to raise money for the event. Also, Erica's grandmother, Geraldine Cunningham, roasted peanuts and Willie Allen, a deacon at Zion Memorial Baptist Church, sold them. The MJ Team didn't know exactly how the party should be organized, so they received help from Allen and Mrs. Cunningham. The afternoon's festivities started at 3 with the girls singing Christmas carols and, of course, playing Michael Jackson's records..The girls also individually greeted the partygoers and wished each of them a merry Christmas. The teen hostesses served sandwiches, mints, peanuts, cookies and potato chips and passed out more than 55 bags bursting with additional goodies. "We thought about what we (MJ Team) like to have at parties," says Erica, "and we decided we would serve them some of the same thing." However, the girls kept in mind that some of the senior citizens could not eat certain foods, and they carefully planned the party's menu. "We wanted everything to be just right," says Erica. "It was a lot of fun," Erica says. "We enjoyed Social Notes wim* /vi?/i 1 l/M/ 14/ C 3 ill present four 'ffkV 1\[ /t /t i irvice awards J I T/l/l! ACP's annual I Banquet on ards, named in .
