During the peak years at Motown, the Four Tops toured and/or recorded with nearly everv other artist on the label in eluding Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, the Temptations, Smokey Robinson and the Sliracles, the Marvelettes, the Elgins, the Spinners, Tammi Terrell, Junior Walker and Edwin Starr. As their career and the nonsiop hits ~ronTTmretf, the Four Tops appeared in a wide variety of concert and club settings, from the star-studded shows at New York's famous Apollo Theatre and those at the Brooklyn Fox nostea oy New York disc jockey Murray The K to the Grand Ole Opry and Las Vegas' most prestigious lounges. They went beyond the realm of the ' impressive Motown roster to share the stage with Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers, Little Anthony and the Imperials, the Four Seasons and the Beach Boys. "She has to go where she'll be comfortable." This kind of supervision of the Doggetts' only child has led to Pam's amazing success, says Pacesetter Coach Brown. "Parental support is the difference," he says. "There are several factors that make a quality athlete. This separates Pam from the others I've coached." The rising senior wants to major in law enforcement. She's wanted to be a police officer since her elementary school days and still rarely misses "Charlie's Angels" re-runs. In no way is she shy about celebrities either. At l^st summer's junior nationals, held : _ . I I 1 f .? ? in me wcck oeiore tne Olympic Trials, Brown and Doggett stayed an extra week. Doggett, who knew how to get to the Coliseum track, continually tried to sneak in and introduce herself to the nation's top track and field stars. She talked to Carl Lewis and Edwin M<?es, but was caught in her attempt to corner her idol, heptathlete Jackie Joyner. According to her mother, Doggett isn't afraid of anybody. "Pam's usually not shy," Diana Doggett says. "She's extroverted and quite active, although there are times when I find her in her own world. Then it's like she has a different personality altogether." But most of the time Pam Doggett is active, so much so that there are few sports she hasn't tried and found success in. "Bowling and ice hockey," she answers when asked which sports ^ledoesn't play. Thei*frvjs a story of Doggett breaking a"i>?ighborhood boy's jaw playing football. "I was playing center and, after hiking the ball, he fell on my elbow," she says. "It wasn't intentional.""We had to make her stop playing football after that," says her mother. "We didn't want her hurting other children." If there is a precedent in Doggett's family for her athletic success, it comes from her grandfather. June Doggett liked to run more than anything else. "When he was in his prime, he liked to run horses," his son says. Interestingly, it was Brian Epstein, the Beatles' guiding force, who organized the Four Tops' first European tour, and the group partied and performed with all of the legends of British rock. THe reason for the impact of the Detroit sound and, by extension, the unparalleled popularity ^e .u~ r? -r ? ui me ruui tup, is no mystery. Motown was one of the music industry's first successful indepen-7 dent labels, free of the <6?T* straints and limitations imposed by the larger companies (who had little respect for popular music and even less use for black artists). Motown's aim was to provide access for these artists and "music for the masses," songs personified by solid rock/orchestral arrangements, close harmonies, the anneal nf a strong lead vocal, melodies which were truly catchy and lyrics that spoke of hard work, good times, the ecstasy of love and the misery of losing it. 1 Watching an audience at a Four Tops concert today is an exciting reminder of the pleasure From Page B5 6 HMMMMMMMNMIMftMHtHtHltllllMIHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHIIIIIItl porch at our farm in Simpson Community (near Browns Summit) and watch him.
