In addition, Hartsfield says the club has worked with the Forsyth County Agricultural Extension Service on a vegetable garden. The vegetables were given to needy families in Winston-Salem. McKoy, the new president, says he has been a member of the club for three years. ‘1 like lawns and flowers, says McKoy. “After taking trips with my wife to different garden shows, I became interested.” McKoy says he thinks more men don’t have garden clubs because “men are always thought of as too macho to work with flowers.” He says the ladies in the garden council don’t tease the Prince’s Feather members but look at them at competitors, do the other clubs. just as they And the men appear up to challenge. Next year, McKoy says, “We want to enlarge our program to encourage other men to come to the club.” Members of the club are Robert Scales, a retired head of housekeeping at Wake Forest University; Robert Jeffries, a rlllllllllltllllllllllllllll,null,III,11111111111,111,1, retired member of the Winston- Salem Alcoholic Beverage Com mission Board; the Rev. There has been no satisfactory answer, and the answers that are being given only cast more doubt on the actions of the people in direct command of the forces try ing to dislodge MOVE, Gregore Sambor and Managing Director Leo Brooks. The MOVE house was sur rounded by hundreds of policemen. And despite' all the reports of MOVE firepower, no machine guns were found on the scene, and few other weapons were recovered. On the contrary, what emerges is a picture of a house fortified with logs that surveillance teams had probably watched being carried in, in which seven desperate adults bar ricaded themselves with four children, attempting to answer the fire of a huge force of sharp shooters armed with automatic weapons, tear gas and explosives. There was no reason to drop a bomb on such a house in a residential neighborhood. especially after the other residents had been evacuated. It is said that a person reveals important things about his character in moments of extreme tension. In this particular mo ment, Sambor revealed an appall ing deficiency in sensitivity and judgment, and there is just no other way to put it. tllll Illllllllllllllllllll Elks From Page A6 iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii, iiiii„ii,„„iiii„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„„,„„„„„„„„„i„„„iiiiiiiiiiiiii,ii,i Church located at 1501 Patterson Ave. The Elks Day honorees are selected from members of the host lodge and temples for meritorious duties performed in the organization and community. At stake is the political integri ty of the black community, which lately has been chewed up and spit out by the powers that be in this town. Somebody somewhere apparently feels that black people can be sold a bill (pardon the pun) of goods time and again and still march obediently to the beat of City Hall when their voting clout is needed. So I’m not voting for a new coliseum, even though the con cept itself is very sound. As far as I’m concerned, we as a city can move forward together, or not at all. llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll■lllllllllllllllllllllll, Edelman From Page A4 iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii eluding the school lunch pro gram. Also, Rep. Augustus Hawkins (D-Calif.), is keeping up the pressure by introducing a bill (H.R. 7) that boosts child nutrition funding. We must frame our argument in terms of the absolute necessity of these programs. It is not a frill to make sure that a child’s stomach is filled at least once every day. It is essential. In fact, in view of the numerous reports that have documented the recent rise of hunger in our nation, these child nutrition programs are now more urgently needed than ever. More of our congressmen need to hear what that congressman heard. Our children are counting on these lunches. They are coun ting on us to make sure they are there, and we can still do it. But you have to write your senators* and representatives and tell them not to cut child nutrition pro grams .
