Carolina League Confab • Lynchburg’s Steve Elster was named the Carolina League Player of the Month. Elster, a shortstop, batted .351 during May. The league’s managers, who voted on the award, nixed Hamilton, who went 6-0 with a 0.41 earned run average. Hard to believe. • Durham second baseman Flavio Alfaro saw his string of games without an error come to an end last week. Alfaro, the Atlanta Braves’ fourth-round draft choice last June, went 39 games and 183 chances without an error. • Carolina League attendance was up 51 percent through May, according to the league office. The eight teams drew 167,591 in April and May last year, com pared to 252,893 for the same period this year. Baseball Notes As it turns out, Greensboro’s Eduardo and Roberto Zambrano are not twins. One was born a year before the other. The Boston Red Sox media guide, which lists all players in the organization, had both being born on April 23, 1967 .... Appalachian State twins Todd and Tony Welborn were both taken in last week’s free agent draft of college and prep players. Todd went in the fourth round to the New York Mets and Tony in the 21st to the Kansas City Royals .... Hal McRae, an alumnus of Florida A&M, was delighted to see his son selected in the first round of the draft.
