Pond Giants Win Big
The Winston-Salem Pond Giants collected
23 hits en route to a 23-1 rout of Burlington-
Alamance Fence in a semi-pro baseball game
at Mocksville last weekend.
The Pond Giants’ big inning was the
eighth, when they scored nine times. Stan
Smith homered and George Strausbaugh
tripled to highlight the inning.
Winston-Salem scored in every frame but
the sixth to improve its record to 7-2. ■'
Left-hander Dave Mabe scattered seven
hits and struck out eight to run his record to
4-0.

professional. “Coach (Benjamin)

Ford’s not going to do it. You
just don’t stick a fighter out there
without being ready.’’
The news about Boykin’s
cancelled trip came on the heels
of losses by two local profes
sionals in Hardee and Trib Perry.
Hardee, in his sixth pro fight,
loss to Vinnie Costello, a top-
rated contender, in an eight-
round split decision three weeks
ago in Atlantic City. It was a
frustrating loss for Hardee, who
saw one judge give him the bout
4-3-1 and the other two give it to
Costello by the same score.
The 33-year-old Perry, who
lives in Greensboro and fights for
Manager Big Tom Lawrence’s
Gladiators, was stopped in a bout
at Portsmouth, Va., last Mon
day. Perry, a former N.C. A&T
football player and veteran pro
boxer, is considering retirement.
Alas, this is not the end of the
list of woes.
Three amateurs from Reynolds
Park - Harold Bennett, Michael
Miller and Thomas Warren -
were unable to attend the Eastern
Sports Festival in Lake Placid,
N.Y., this week. Their trip was
cancelled due to insufficient
funds. Coach Angus Lowery,
who replaced his brother Whit,
said he could not raise the $2,(XX)
needed to fund the trip.
Bennett, Miller and Warren all
won state championships in
Laurinburg last month.
Even Whit Lowery didn’t have
a good week. Lowery, on a six-
month trial with Don King, saw
his boxer lose a decision in Las
Vegas.
The Count Is On
It’s almost as if the recent
results and cancellations are com
ing together as a response to what
local boxing people feel is a ma
jor act of betrayal.
Benjamin coached a long line
of outstanding boxers, before
1951, in a gym on Cherry Street
and after that in the basement of
the Patterson Avenue YMCA.
Benjamin’s fighters won state,
regional and national titles on a
regular basis. He even got Joe
McFadden an exhibition with Joe
Louis.
When Benjamin grew ill a few
years back. Ford took over and
groomed Hardee, who won near
ly 90 fights as an amateur and
qualified for the Olympic Trials
last summer.

new football coach. Hooker comes from
Burlington Cummings, where he had been
an assistant the last five years. Previously, he
had been an assistant for two years at
Western Alamance and in Newark, N.J., the
three years before that.
The 32-year-old Hooker replaces Bernie
Blaney, who directed the Bobcats to a 7-3
record last season.
Hooker played his collegiate football at
Wagner College. He is a native of New York
City.
Little League Results
The Giants trimmed the Yankees 13-12
last Saturday in the next-to-last weekend of
play in the Twin Little City League.
In other games, the Braves beat the Twins
7-5, the Dodgers clipped the Cubs 9-5 and
the Mets downed the Reds 10-6.
In Pony League games Sunday, the Astros
topped the Red Sox 6-2 and the Pirates drub
bed the Cardinals 9-2.
The regular season ends with this
weekend’s play and the tournament begins
next weekend.

four qualify). Moses ran a 10.85, Martin a
10.86.
