Masonic Temple.

committee looks for teachers who
have obtained the respect of their
students, co-workers and the
students' parents. It also seeks
teachers who are actively involved
in the school and community
and who are poised and articulate.
Foreign language assignments
have kept many a high school student
at home on Friday nights,
and as curricula have become
more technicallly oriented, en
thusiasm for language classes has
dwindled.
Mrs. Grissom says that in the
past foreign languages were a
standard requirement for college
entrance, but since the requirements
have been somewhat
relaxed, many students do not
voluntarily sign up to take the
classes.
44 Language enrollment has
gone down since the students
have some leeway depending on
what tjieir college majors will
be," says Mrs. Grissom. 44We
had to promote the foreign
language in order to keep it alive.
I was able to keep it alive even
when it was dying, but I had to

a language. I started our French
singing group and planned trips
to foreign countries like Europe
and Mexico."
Mrs. Grissom has seen a variety
of students come and go dur
ing her years of teaching. Have
students changed much over the
years?
Laughing Mrs. Grissom says,
"There have been many changes
in educational techniques in my
time, but the students have remained
basically the same." ...
Doris Moore, president of
Brown Alumni Chapter, and club
members send out special thanks
to members of the community for
their support of the chapter's recent
fund-raising drive.
The proceeds from the Brown
Ram Disco will be used for a
scholarship for a Winston-Salem
State University student. Addi
tional funds will be used to sup-?
port National Alumni Association
activities.

The Northern Connection
Club at Winston-Salem State
University gave the Twin City a
"fall cleaning" on Oct. 4 and 5.
The club is composed of 60
students who live in the states
above the Mason-Dixon Line, including
New Jersey, New York,
Connecticut and Massachusetts.
Club members have started a
drive to help clean areas from the
WSSU campus to the East
Winston Shopping Center by
picking up litter.
The president of the club is
Craig Johnson of New York.
Committee chairmen include
Ricardo Soares, Anita Toney,
Jeff Webb, Tony Wilkerson and
Twana Hook, Miss Northern

The Flora Buff Flower Club
met recently at the home of president
Doris Hartsfield.
The agenda included viewing
pictures of the fourth district
flower show and commendations
to the club for the upkeep of the
flower plot at Borwen Park
Boulevard and Dellabrook Road.
The club will celebrate its anniversary
in November with a
worship service at Grace
Presbyterian Church.
A dinner at the Holiday Inn
North will follow the service ....
The Royal Daughters of Zion
Fellowship was honored Satur
day, Oct. 19, at the home of
Pastor Anna Lester.
Guest speaker was evangelist
M. Dent. Evangelist Florence
Williams is president of the
fellowship.
The fellowship had a time of
praise and a thanksgiving of
testimonies. The event concluded
with a fellowship buffet dinner.

Marine Corps radio communication
systems.
A 1983 graduate of R.J.
Reynolds High School, Hines is
the son of Barbara J. Cockerham
of Winston-Salem. He joined the
Marine Corps in October 1984.
Navy Seaman Apprentice
Richard A. Necessary recently
departed on a 10-month deployment
to the Mediterranean while
stationed aboard the command
ship USS Coronado in Norfolk,
Va.
During the deployment,
Necessary and the Coronado will
visit several Mediterranean ports.
Necessary is the son of Richard
and Audrey Necessary of
Winston-Salem. He graduated
from North Forsyth High School
in 1984 and joined the Navy in
September 1984.
