Winston-Salem's GRA-Y foothall
program is smaller and
yuuugci iiiiin me oetter-Known
Pop Warner League.
Yet, it is an attractive alternative
to the highly competitive
Warner program.
"Some people like to consider
GRA-Y a feeder for Pop
Warner," said Program Director
Robert Dunlap. "But I don't like
for it to be considered a farm
league. We're a value-oriented
program.
"W'e have a different
philosophy. The difference is we
teach. We don't put 100-percent
emphasis on winning and we
don't cut. Everybody plays. Pop
Warner takes the 35 best and cuts
the rest."
Indirectly, the 9-year-old
GRA-Y program does act as a
feeder for Pop Warner because
the latter has more age groups.
The GRA-Y's honor roll includes
Winston-Salem State's
Leonardo Horn, Eton's Chris
Christmas, former Reynolds and
WSSU player Cedric Moss,
Carver's Fernando Horn and Ray
Agnew and Parkland's Jacques
Bitting and Willie McCants.
GRA-Y, which is sponsored in
part by the Winston Lake Family
YMCA, had four teams this
season. Each team was divided
into 9-10 and 11-12 age groups.
The league concluded the
season last Saturday and the
GRA-Y banquet is set for this
Saturday at the Reynolds Park
picnic area. Festivities begin at
noon.
The Hall-Woodward Jets,
coached by Thurman Purvis and
Linwood McCoy, won the league
championship. The Jets were led
by split end Carlos Brown,

round of the state playoffs with
an easy win over Greensboro
Dudley Monday night.
Coach Janet Beavers'
Mustangs won the match with
game scores of 15-2, 15-9 and
15-0. They hosted North Forsyth,
a first-round winner over
Reynolds, Wednesday in the second
round.
"Our setters (Felecia Cope and
Veronica Green) played very
I well," Beavers said. "Angela

The Mustangs ran their record
to 19-2. Their only losses came
early in the season to North and
Ledford.
4 4 We weren't playing well
then," said Beavers, who played
volleyball for Wake Forest in the
70s. "Even though we have
several seniors in the lineup, they
really hadn't played too much
together. It took a while for them
to get used to each other."
Parkland had won the Central
Piedmont 4-A Conference championship
last Wednesday with a
difficult match against Kannapolis
Brown. The Mustangs
won by scores of 9-15, 15-9 and
15-3.

The 5-foot-lO, 180-pound
Davis said he hopes to play football
for WSSU. He attended
North Carolina Central last year
and was the Eagles' backup
quarterback. He started in two
games (Norfolk State and Hampton
University) for injured allCIAA
quarterback Gerald
Fraylon. Davis won CIAA
Rookie-of-the-Week honors in
the 17-13 loss to Hampton.
NCCU Coach Hank Lattimore
said Davis dropped out of school
at the end of fall semester. "He
said that he had personal problems
and he was the only person
who would understand," Lattimore
said.
"I thought I would be better
off somewhere else," Davis said
last week. "It was nothing personal.
Everybody was very nice at
Central. It's a good school."
The 19-year-old Davis, now
employed at a hardware store in
King, said he planned to contact
WSSU Coach BUI Hayes at the
end of the current season.
Since Davis is sitting out this
year, he would be eligible to play
next fall if he transfers.
