Ram men,
By DAVID BULLA
Chronicle Sports Editor
Winston-Salem State began
basketball practice last ueek and
.assistant ^oacn 1 im tyrant said
the first few weeks will be a
period of conditioning and
evaluation.
"The major thing we're trying
to do this time of year is conditioning,"
Grant said last Friday
at the old WSSU gymnasium.
"So we're doing drills that require
vigorous running and jumping."
The Rams return only one
starter from last season's 16-12
team. Gone are forwards Kevin
"Cadillac" Y aughan (12.2 points
per game) and Eugene Penick
(10.9), both of whom used up
their eligibility. Point guard
Haywood Workman (10.2) also
departed, transferring to Oral
Roberts, and Linwood Gorham
(17.1) dropped out of school.
Alexander Hooper (13.2) was
only an occasional starter last
season. Due to his quality perfor
mances as a sixth man, he was
assigned to cover all-America
Jamie Waller in the NCAA Division
II regional upset of topranked
Virginia Union. Not only
did Hooper hold Waller in check,
the forward drilled the gamewinner
at the buzzer for a 44-42
Ram victory.
The 6-foot-4 New York native
made enough of an impression to
gain preseason all-CIAA honors.
Guard Steve Hood (5.8) also
had some starts and Oscar
Williams (9.3) saw plentv of playing
time.
The top freshman is Derek
Daniels, a 6-7Vi center from
Washington, D.C. Daniels
averaged 17 points and eight rebounds
for Eastern High School.
Coach Stenson Conley also got
his women's team started,

playing volleyball.
"Practice is kind of slow now
with them playing volleyball,"
Conley said. "Practice began the
week of fall break, so the number
of walkons is low . We're working
with freshmen and the girls who
didn't play volleyball. Eventually,
I expect to have 14 on the
team."
