Page B4-The Chronicle, Thursda College Noteboo Hayes to Winston-Salem State Coach Bill Hayes is among seven persons to be inducted into the North Carolina Central University Sports Hall of Fame next Saturday. Hayes, who has a 10-year record of 77-33-2 at WSSU, will be joined by former NCCU football Coach George L. Quiett, St. r Augustine's basketball coach and Athletic Director Harvey standouts Paul Winslow and Herman Mathews, pioneer women's Coach Krtte Kelly Martin and the former chairman of the university's athletic committee, the late Llndsey A. Merrfttt. Hayes, who has coached at WSSU since 1976 after serving as an assistant at Wake Forest, was a three-time small college allAmerica for the Eagles' football team in 1962-64. A graduate of Durham Hillside High School, Hayes played center and linebacker on NCCU teams that won two Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association titles under r Coach Herman Riddick. Hayes won all-CJAA honors three years in a row. At Hillside, he was a football and track and field star. He was named to the all-state football team his senior year and won five individual track and field state titles -- three in the discus and two in the shot put. Hayes is responsible for making WSSU, once mired in football obscurity, into a perennial power in the C1AA. His teams have won two CIAA championships and the last three Southern Division titles. More than 30 of his players have gone on to professional careers. Quiett, a graduate of St. Augustine's, coached the NCCU \football team from 1968-72. His winning percentage of .734 is the best in the history of the pro gram. , Quiett, now a member of the NCCU physical education facuT- K ty, was CIAA Coach of the Year in 1969, NAIA District 26 Coach of the Year in '69 and '72, and NCAA Division II Coach of the Year in 1972. Twelve of his players were all-Americas and 36 all-CIAA selections. Heartley played for Central from 1951-55 and was all-CIAA his junior and senior seasons.
