The Chronicle, Thursday, August 28, 1986-Page A9 Haley to discuss ‘Roots’ at SECCA Alex Haley, author of the best selling book “Roots,” will speak at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16. When “Roots” was made into a 12-hour television miniseries and aired in 1977, it drew the greatest program audience in television history, with more than 130 million viewers. Haley’s writing has won him America’s top two writing awards, the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. In the SECCA program, he will discuss his experience in writing “Roots” and his view's on the family. His topic will be “Roots: A Saga of Black History.” Admission is $2-3; seating is limited. There will also be a family pic nic at Salem Lake Park at 2 p.m. The city of Winston-Salem recently issued a posthumous citation to Dr. R.M. Pitts Sr. and Nancy H. Montrose Pitts for their many years of Christian and community service. Pitts was the former pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church. He held doctoral degrees from Shaw University and Benedict College. He was president of the General State Baptist Convention from 1959 to 1965 and also organized the local Baptist Ministers’ Conference. ...
