12-7 win ove/ Howard University. He will miss the first five
weeks of the season with a broken hand.
Jofcuy Cole - Senior "Mike" linebacker, 6-3, 205,

<8 recovered three fumbles.
Donald Evans - Senior lineman, 6-2, 242; Raleigh (Athens

moving to defense late last season. Coach Bill Hayes calls him
an NFL prospect because he has a good combination of size
and speed.
Wlltte Jones - Freshman lineman, 6-3, 240, Spartanburg,
vij ? S.C. (Spartanburg). Jones came to preseason practice with
football on his mind and has earned a starting berth.

Fullback Leonardo Horn was the Rams' No. 2
rusher last season (photo by James Parker).
Walker for several games. He finished with 45 completions in
117 attempts, good for six touchdowns. Walker's experience ~
(he's a senior) and leadership should get him some playing
time, too. * & ''' '
Leonardo Horn - Senior fullback, 6-0, 205, Winston-Salem
(East Forsyth). Horn, being billed as an all-America, was second
on the team in rushing last year with 485 yards. He comes
from a family of athletes; his brother Fernando was a high
school all-America last year.
Louie Pulley - Junior halfback, 5-11, 210, Laurens, S.C.
(District 55). The Rams' best rusher last season, finishing with
524 yards for an average of fix yards per carry. Another allAmerica
candidate.
Cahia Handsome - Junior halfback, 5-9, 185, Tarboro
(Tarboro). Averaged almost five yards a carry. Fastest player
on the team with 4.25 speed in the 40-yard dash. Friend of _
Washington Redskin running back Kelvin Bryant.
Masfca Paul - Senior wide receiver, 5-11, 180, Detroit (Cen-.
tral). Paul is the Rams' deep threat, averaging 22.6 yards a
reception last season. Known as a flashy dresser.
Hiurry Giles - Junior tight end, 6-5, 220, Suffolk, Va. (Kennedy).
Giles averaged 21.9 yards per catch and had three
touchdowns. Animal on the boards for the Rams' basketball
team.
James "Plug" Melton - Freshman tackle, 6-6, 270, Norfolk,
Va. (Washington). Melton's size has given him a good
snot at malting the starting lineup or playing a lot. He was an
all-stater and led Booker T. Washington to back-to-back state
titles in basketball.
Jerry Maynard - Sophomore tackle, 6-4, 280, Reidsville
(Reidsville). Backup to starter Darryl Page last season.

intercepted a Sam Taylor pass and returned it to the VSU
41-yard line. The Rams marched methodically downfield and
fullback Ed Byers scored with 6:29 left in the game.
In VSU's next drive, Taylor overcame a furious third-andfour
rush to connect with Anthony Hamilton for a first down.
Taylor's three-yard bootleg with 1:53 left put the game out of
reach.
The Forecast: Virginia State thought it was headed for a
championship season after the win over Winston-Salem State
last year. But it wasn't to be, for the Trojans finished with a
losing record. Yet, they were in every game, except a 23-0
season-ending loss to eventual CIA A champion Hampton.
Their average score per game was a 13-13 tie.
The Rams did a lot of growing after that loss, going on a
nine-game winning streak that propelled them into their third
straight CIA A Championship Came.
The Trojans lost 11 starters from last season's team, compared
to 12 for the Rams,
It looks like a close contest, especially since it's a season
opener. WSSU may have more incentive because of last year's
loss at VSU. Yet, the Rams cannot afford to be looking forward
to their game next week at arch-rival North Carolina
A AT.
WSSU's defense and running game should control matters
when push comes to shove.
Predicted Score: Winston-Salem State 21, Virginia State 10.
