South Carolina State basketball
Coach Percy 44Chico"
Cakhrefl resigned last week after
his Bulldogs finished with a 14-15
record.
The fourth-year S.C. State
coach had established two major
goals for his team in the
preseason and felt the team did
not meet either. The first goal
was to finish above .500 and the
other was to do well in the MidEastern
Athletic Conference
Tournament. The Bulldogs won
in the first round of the event at
the Greensboro Coliseum two
weeks ago. But they lost to eventual
champion North Carolina
A&T 73-65 in the semifinals.
Caldwell made his decision to
resign after meeting with S.C.
State Athletic Director Dr. Willis
Ham.
His four-year contract runs
- through June 30 of this year.
S.C. State will continue to pay on
his basketball contract through
that date.
Caldwell had a record of 48-65
at the Orangeburg, S.C., school.
The-v Bulldogs have not won a
single\ ME AC men's basketball
championship in the 16-year
history of the conference.
MEAC notes
Cale Player of the Year: It
surprised many an MEAC fan,
out not iNortn Carolina A&T's
George Cafte, who was named
league Player of the Year two
weeks ago.
*'1 was surprised but delighted
by the choice,*' said A&T Coach
Doa Corbett. "But George,
wasn't. He had a speech prepared
for the occasion."
The 6-foot-6 senior with the

cotod on the team in rebounding.
. Other Aggies named to the alb
conference team were Claude
Williams and Thomas "let]
Griff is. Also on the airconference
team were Howard
Spencer of Howard University
and Earl Lee and Steve MHIertof
Coppin State ....
Coming To Terms: Howard
University is still trying to explain
how it was shunned by the National
Invitation Tournament.
The Bison (25-5) had the best
record of teams not selected for
the NCAA Tournament and
seemed an obvious choice for the
NIT. They lost to three NCAA
Tournament teams (A&T, Ohio
State and Providence) and one
NIT team (Villanova) ....
HU First: Toay Mack has
become the first-ever Howard
University wrestler to make the
NCAA Division I championships,
to be held Thursday
through Saturday at the University
of Maryland in College Park.
Mack won the. 150-pound weight
class at the MEAC wrestling
championships ....
Young Shark: Howard,
which fields one of the few swimming
programs in black college
sports, has a dynamite freshman
swimmer in Camille Richards.
The Trinidad native won the 500and
1,650-yard freestyle events at
the Tri-State Championships in
Frostburg, Md., last month. The
rookie also took second in the
100-yard breast stroke ....
Correction And Clarification:
Strictly speaking, the
MEAC has not lost its one-yearold
automatic bid to the NCAA
Division I-AA football playoffs,
as reported in last week's
notebook. However, the conference
has not received renewal
eitner, according to the NCAA
Men's Championship office.
Renewals will be made over the
summer, according to the
NCAA. North Carolina A&T lost
* to eventual national champion
Georgia Southern 52-21 in the
first round.

SWAC asides
A Gibbie Gimme: There she
lurked, on the Southern University
bench, patiently waiting for
her year to come. The season was
1985-86 and the freshman, a
former prep all-America at
Monroe, La., Carroll High
School, was learning a lesson in
humility.
One humbling season and hundreds
of points later, that rookie,
Gibbie Phillips, is an integral part
of the Lady Jaguar program. She
averaged 17.2 points per game
this past season and scored a
career-high 40 in a win over
Texas Southern.
"It was real hard not playing
last vear." Phillins uiiH " Mv
family motivated me to hang in
there. They told me to stick in
there and my year would come."
The 5-5 Phillips' forte is the
long-range jumper, which is
almost a gimme for the Southern
sophomore. She made 64 percent
of her three-pointers this past
season ....
The Last Brother:. Joe
Faulkner is the last of three
Faulkner brothers at Southern
University. His brothers James
and Jeff graduated after last
season, and their rugged younger
brother was left to lead the
Jaguars. That he did, as Southern
made the NCAA Division I Tournament
field for the first time
since 1984. Faulkner, a native of
the Virgin Islands, averaged 16.7

Century Clutr Leaders:Southern's
men's program,
under Carl Stewart, might have
been known in the mid-7Qs as the
Century Jags based on the frequency
with which they surpassed
the 100-point mark. Two coaches ?
later, the Jaguars were regaining
their prolific ways, scoring 100 or ?
more points in each of three ^

brought their total of century
games for this season to seven,
the most since the 1977-78
season. Southern has had 80
100-point games since 1972.

z.inn And The Art Of
Basketball Maintenance:
Alabama A&M guard Sherrfe
Zinn played with a mask on last
season to protect a broken nose.
She performed well enough
despite the uncomfortable contraption
to earn all-America
honors. This season, Zinn, who
had maintained some pretty lofty
statistical totals entering her
senior vear. was mnv^H tn mmrH
and broke her right hand in a I
freak, off-the-court accident at I
Christmas. But that hasn*t
prevented her from surpassing
career 1,000-point and -rebound I
marks. The 5-11 senior accomplished
both last month in a
75-67 win over Benedict.
