Alpha Kappa Alpha to sponsor health fair, AIDS Rap-A-Thon
Each year, Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority sponsors a health fair. This
year, in conjunction with the health
fair, the sorority will present an AIDS
Rap-A-Thon. Chi Eta Phi Nursing
Sorority and the Urban League will
co-sponsor the event.
The rap-a-thon will be open to
teen-agers 13 to 18 who currently are
enrolled in school. Teen-agers are
encouraged to develop raps that dis
cuss the facts about AIDS, its spread
and its prevention. Three monetary
prizes will be awarded for the best rap
songs concerning aids, hirst, secoi
and third place prizes will be $500,
$200 and $100.
Preliminaries in the event w$re
held Wednesday, May 31. All events
will culminate Saturday, June 10,
with the AIDS Rap-A-Thon and a
health fair at Rupert Bell' Recreation
Center, 1501 Mount Zion Place.
Health fair activities begin at 9 a.m.

receiving academic awards from UNCG
Twanna Dozier
Seven students recently
received awards from the School of
Nursing at the University of North
Carolina at Greensboro for the aca
demic year during the school's spe
cial graduation exercises May 14.
Among the honorees were
Twanna L. Dozier of Winston
Salem, who received the Dean's
Recognition Award.

W-S/FC schools announce clean campus contest results
During the week of April 24 to
i8, students teachers, custodians and
principals all over the city and county
put a little more emphasis on clean
schools. CleaVi and Green bulletin
boards and posters were found in
halls and classrooms and students
were seen stalking around campus
with trash bags.
The Clean Campus Contest,
sponsored by Keep Winston-Salem
Beautiful Inc. and the Garden Club
Council, is held each fall and spring
to raise students' awareness of the
importance of litter control, involve
students in clean up activities and to
recognize the tidiest schools in the
school system
Judging is based on several
cleanliness and beautification criteria.
Fourteen out of 52 schools are chosen
as winners. Winners receive a Clean,
and Green flag to fly.
The contest was first held in the
schools eight years ago.
With 39 being the highest possi
ble score, 33 schools scored 30 and
higher.
The winning schools in the
Spring '89 campus contest were:
Cash, Clemmons, Griffith, Hall
Woodard, Kemersville, Konnoak, Old
Richmond, Rural Hall and Vienna
Elementary schools; Kennedy and
Northwest Middle schools; and East
Forsyth, South Park and West Forsyth
High schools.
Honorable mention went to For
est Park, Lewisville, Sedge Garden,
Union Cross and Walkertown Ele
mentary schools and to Reynolds
High School.
Keep Winston-Salem Beautiful
Inc. offered the middle and high
school in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth
County schools the opportunity for
students to use their dramatic and cre
ative skills in producing a video tape
with the subject matter being either
litter control or recycling and its ben
efits.
The contest, sponsored by Keep
Winston-Salem Beautiful Ijic.,
required student participation in each
element of production including writ
ing, acting, shooting, editing and
directing. Professional assistance was
prohibited. Fourteen groups entered
videos in the contest. The entire stu

dent body was invited to participate,
but most of the entries were received
from science, drama and communica
tion-classes.
The choice of prizes for first
place were $50 cash, a pizza party,
albums/tapes and posters or a tree to
plant on school grounds. Second
place winners were given a choice of
$30 in cash, movie passes or a tree for
school grounds.
Media professionals from the
Winston-Salem area conducted the
judging. Criteria included originality,
creativity, clarity of message and
overall quality. The winners of the
1988-89 video production contest
were:

1st place - Northwest Middle
School, Brenda Burches, teacher,
"Little Lucy in the Land of Litter."
2nd place (tie) - Hancs Middle
School, Jackie Efeiuku, teachcr, "Peo
ples Trash Court" and Hanes Middle

Benefits of Recycling."
