AKA AIDS Rap-A-Thon yields strong messages
Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. recently
sponsored an AIDS Rap-A-Thon at
the Rupert Bell Recreation Center.
The event was open to teen
? agers 13 to 18 and encouraged them
to develop raps that discussed the
facts about AIDS, its spread and
prevention.
Chapter members feel that the
use of rap as a medium to reach and
educate youth about the deadly dis
ease was very effective. Twenty
three young people participated in
the program.
All of the participants were
required to attend a question -and
answer program before entering the
contest. The orientation program
was conducted by members of the
sorority and Robert Wooten, a
physician assistant with the Sexual
ly Transmitted Disease Unit at
Reynolds Health Center. The pro
gram was open to parents as well as
teens.
Each participant received a gift
package valued at approximately
$25 in addition to the top prizes of
$500, $200 and $100 being awarded
to the first-, second- and third-place
winners respectively.
All entries were judged on con
tent, originality, presentation,
appearance and overall perfor
mance.
The traditional health fair,
sponsored annually by the chapter,
was held before the Rap-A-Thon.
Seventeen agencies provided a vari
ety of health screening and informa
tion for nearly 100 registered partic
ipants. The health fair was co-spon
sored by the Winston-Salem Urban
League and the Chi Chi Chapter of
Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority.
While both events were a suc
cess, the Rap-A-Thon provided a
new and positive avenue for youth
to share their messages of preven
tion about AIDS.
Desdemona Lewis was the
chair for the health fair and the
Rap-A-Thon. Annette Wilson is the
chapter s basileus.
