Money management and marriage: Sources of conflict
By Joanne j falls

A big marriage boom is taking
place in America; and during the
summer months, many young peo
ple, as well as persons of all ages,
will march down the aisles of matri
mony and be showered with gifts,
hugs and kisses, words of congratu
lations and best wishes.
But after these brides and
bridegrooms get home, money man
agement problems will begin to
stare them solidly in the face ?
sometimes for the first time in their
lives.
Marriage is a serious undertak
ing and should not be entered into
hastily and inadvisedly. Some of
these newly married people will be
able to make
the marriage
and money
management
adj ustment
because of
preparations
they have
made before
the marriage.
Some couples
will make the
adjustment
because of
sound judge- ""
ment, true
bonds of love, former experience of
hardships, wise financial planning
and practice and family help.
Some couples who do not have
any of these resources will still be
able Ao make it because they will
have the judgement and wisdom to
seek advice froirr reliable available
sources such as:
? Experienced and trusted rela
tives and family friends.
? Local agencies that stand
ready to help with advice, useful
information and materials.
? One of the oldest and most
reliable family information agencies
in Forsyth County is the Agricultur
al Extension Service. The Agricul
tural Extension Office in Forsyth
County is listed on page 76 in your
local telephone directory, and these
are some of the booklets that young
couples can secure from their Coun
ty Extension offices: A Guide to
Budgeting for the Young Couple, A
Home Study Course in Money Con
trol, Your Money's Worth in Foods,
A Guide to Budgeting for the Fami
ly, Understanding Life Insurance for
the Family, Where You Shop Is As
Important As What You Buy, Keep
ing Family Household Records,
What to. Discard, and several other
helpful oublications. in various cat
egories of family living.
As I said, marriage should not
be entered into hurriedly and inad
visably without forethought and
without realization of the responsi
bilities and the commitment
involved.
Some students, and other peo
ple, who are not ready for marriage
or still in school, without jobs, and
without forethought, enter into mar
riage simply because they are in
love. Some of these people have
never held jobs, never faced any

serious hardships and have never
had any experience with budgeting
any money except their allowances.
They should ask themselves
this question: Am I really ready for
marriage? Am I confused about
what love really is? Will I awaken
one day to find out that. I was really
too young and what I thought was
true love has died out and been cov
ered up in hardships and bills and
poverty? Will you find that your
disrespect for each other has taken
the place of your infatuation?
I think ii would be a very good
idea for couples who married while
in school to set up a counseling
bureau to offer free advice to stu
dents who are planning to get mar
ried before completing their educa
tion and before securing jobs.
Ii is never a good thing to enter
marriage depending on what your
parents can give you financially,
because serious illness, accidents,
financial disaster, divorce and other
changes in lifestyles can affect your
marriage beyond anything which
you could ever imagine.
Marriage carries with it sacri
fice, change in lifestyle, money
'management, new decisions, and
new experiences and responsibili
ties. Can you accept it?
