Hawkins attends Elks gathering Daughter Arlease B. Hawkins, P.S.Pf-P.G.DR., attended the 70th North Carolina State Association of the I.B.P.O. Elks of the World in Raleigh, at the Radisson Plaza Hotel, May 4-8. Mrs. Hawkins joined the Elks Organization in 1946, and has been a - dcUiiatcU, UevuteU, antf faithful merrr ber of the LB. P.O. Elks of the World for 44 years. There were two temples of the organization in Winston-Salem when she joined Elkdom, The Gardenia Temple and the Iris Temple. Mrs. Hawkins had joined the Iris Temple, and in 1947, the two temples were consolidated under the by-laws of the Daughter Elk- Rituals, conducted~by^ the Grand Lodge Secretary, and was then named the "Garden of Iris Tem ple, 220:: ? r Mrs. Hawkins was elected DaugfiF tcr Ruler of the Local Temple, and served in that capacity for 30 years. She also joined other clubs within the local temple: the Officers' Club, the Mary Ford Fez Education Depart ment, and the Arlease B. Hawkins Past State Presidents Club, which was named in her honor. Mrs. Hawlons is now Past State President of the North Carolina State Association. She has held this posi tion for the last eight years, and was reelected as Daughter State President for two more years. Mrs. Hawkins' position in the North Carolina State Association gives her the power to rule with fidelity, and see that all daughters be governed by the Laws of to Dcgiec Ritual, with charity, justice, and sis terly love. Mrs. Hawkins presides over 48 North Carolina State Temples and conducts her meetings in the proper decorums, handed down from the rules and by-laws of the Grand Temple Ritual of the I.B.P.O. Elks of the World. The Local Temple and Lodge (Camei City Elks No, 1021) turned out in large numbers to attend the 70th North Carolina State Associa tion. Among some of the members, ~ degrees and honors were gfvern Dgt. Ar lease Smith, Pat. Debra King, Dgt .Mary Surls, and Dgt. Janice jRamadon., received their state degrees. Past State President Honors were given to Dgt. Betty Wesley, P.S.P., she is also the Daughter Ruler in the Local Temple; Dgt. Evelyn Flinches, P.S.P., the Local Temple Assistant Daughter Ruler, Dgt. Brenda Perkins, the 1990 State Queen Representative. Daughter Past State Presidents retaining their seats, newly elected officers, and Past Daughter in atten dance were: Mrs. Arlease B. State Trustee, State Usher, and State Chairperson of the N.C. State Queen Department; Dgt. Dorothy S. Moore, P.S.P.-P.G.D.R., State Assis tant Conductress, and State Advisory Board; Dgt. Lorraine Brown, P.S.p., N.C. State Usher; Dgt. Mary H. Benton, P.S.P., State Co-Chairperson of the Queen Department, and Per sonal Secretary to the State financial Secretary, Dgt. Bessie L. Wallace, P.S.P.-P.G.D.R. Dgtr Wallace is a member of the Capital City Temple #310 in Raleigh, N.C. Dgt Themla G. Moore, P.S.P.-P.G.D.R., Past Daugh ter of the Courtesy Department, Dgt. Maxine H. Church, and is mar ried to Edward J. Hawkins, who is also a member of the I.B.P.O. Elks of the World, and is the State Financial Secretary for the Enlde Department Dgt. Mary H. Benton, P.S.P., extends best wishes to all Brothers and Daughters of the Local Temple and Lodge for the 1991 Convention to be successful and well attended so as to support the State Association for progress and goodwill. W-S Chapter of Top Ladies honors mothers on their day The Winston-Salem Chapter of Tops Ladies of Distinction Honored a mother on Mother's Day at the churches where the chapter had worshiped on its anniversary during its existence. Where possible, each honoree was presented a fiaiued citation during morning worship by a club member. Included among those honored were Gladys Brown Fleming of Shiloh Baptist Church and Carroll Brown Mayo of Mount Zion Baptist Church. Mrs. Fleming and Mrs. Mayo are the daughters of the late Frank W. and Mary Dal ton Brown. Mrs. Fleming has been a mem ber of Stittoti for more titan 73 years. She is the oldest active mem ber of the church, and is active in the Church Sunday School and was ?one of1 its former teachers . Mrs . Fleming is a member of the senior choir, Ladies Aid No. 2, and Mis sionary Group No. 8, is a Dea coness and the President of the Coneatta Hawkins Auxiliary. She attends the Weekly Prayer Service. Mrs. Mayo, a surrogate mother, has been a member of Mount Zion since 1916. She too is the oldest active member of the church and is active in the Church Sunday School, the Baptist Training Union, the Ladies Progressive Club, and the Hattie File Club. She is a former " member of the senior choir and the= Kitchen Committee. Cited for 80 years of service and for being the oldest active member of Saint Paul United Methodist Church was Mrs. Elizabeth Wade. Mrs. Wade is active with the United ? Methodist Women, and Chairs the committee which supervises the selection and arrangement of flow ers for the alter and the church, and oversees the activities of the sick committee. Mrs. Ella Belle Tillman was selected for honors at grace Presby terian Church. She has been an active member -of^he ^hwoh^or - more than 60 years. Mrs. Tillman is active with the Presbyterian Women, co-chair of the Finance Comm ittee , moderator of -the Trustee Board, moderator of Circle No. 2, and active in the Church Sunday School. The final honoree, Mrs. Lflia Funchcss/ was from Hanes C.M.E. Church, Mrs, Funchess is 101 years _ old and a life-long member of Hanes. The Senior Citizens Committee of the Top Ladies of Distinction ini tiated and developed the project. The presentations were made by a member of the honoree's church. Carver High senior honored TTarolyn Louise Lowery, a senior at Carver High School, received the honor of being chosen as Marketing Student of the Year for the Distribu i . 1 Carolyn Louise Lowery tive Education Clubs of America at the Employers' Luncheon held at the Benton Convention Center on April 18. ? She was presented with a plaque, as well as a monetary gift by the Merchants Association. Her guests included Alice Parrish of Mother and Daughter, her supervisor, and Lynette Hawkins, who serves on the DECA Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Marketing Advisory Com mittee, who is employed by Sara - Lee Corp,, is Carver's adoptive par ent and Carolyn's mentor. Her mother, Betty G. Lowery, and her niece Shena James, also attended. She has been involved in a vari ety of DECA-related activities, including a marketing trip to New York and also worked at this year's furniture market in High Point She was first-runner up in the apparel and accessory competition. She plans to continue her career in mar keting and to further her marketing education at Forsyth Technical Community College. She is the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Richard F.
