what this program does for kids is
really important," Ruffin said.
Ruffin has chaired the cam
paign the last two years and said
one of the significant factors about
live campaign is that 80 percent of
the money raised comes from the
African-American community.
"People get the satisfaction of
giving something back to the com
munity," said Ruffin, "It is vcry'scl
dom that when you ask someone to
give to the campaign, they say no.
They may not be able to give as
much "but they give. We have
-.exceeded our gonklmiUiis program _
every year and you can see the
pride in the faces of our people in
. knowing that they have helped chil
dren in our community."
Tommy Gavin, chair of the
Winston Lake YMCA hoard, said
that the 'Y- is on solid ground and
that the money raised in the cam- ?
paign is part of the planned budget
to carry out various programs.
Those programs include summer
camp, youth basketball, day care,
tutorial, and the Black Achievers, to
name a lew.
"The money can be used to off
set costs iorundcrprivilcgcd kids.
Its a worthwhile program where
there is an obvious need,'" UavTri
said. "With the economy being what
it is, we have to work hard. And
with Norm leaving us to take the
job in Atlanta, we need to be sure
we redouble our efforts."
He said even though Joyner is
leaving shortly, he has worked just
as though he was going to be
around when the campaign ends. "I
really appreciate that," Gavin said,
"He's just a super person."
