Sara Lee/Charles McLean Community Service Award was
established to recognize people in the Winston-Salem and Forsyth
County community who provide needed services to the local area
and who motivate others to improve their own quality of life.
Sponsored by Sara Lee Corporation, the award was named for
Charles McLean, retired State Field Secretary of the NAACP, to
honor him for his years of dedicated service to the NAACP and to
Noi$h Carolina and Winston-Salem.

CHARLES A. McLEAN
Charles McLean grew up in the NAACP. His mother started one
of the first branches in North Carolina in 1918 and McLean obtain
ed-his-first-membership while in^high^school.
McLean served as NAACP State Field Secretary for more than ?
28 years and was an active force in voter registration drives and the
enactment of the 1965 Voting Rights Act..
In addition to his NAACP work, McLean has had an active
business career, helping to start a major savings and loan company
and the East Winston Shopping Center.

DR. H. REMBERT MALLOY
Dr. H. Rembert Malloy is most often described as a caring, devoted person
who has spent more than 50 years living his commitment to the community and
its people.
A native of Hamlet, N.C., Dr. Malloy attended public schools in
Winston-Salem, graduated from Johnson C. Smith University andeamedhis
M.D. degree from Howard University. His professional credentials are
numerous, including membership in the Beta Kappa Chi Honorary Scientific
Society, a member of the Editorial Staff of the National Medical Journal and he is
a life member of the Forsyth County Medical Society and the State Medical
Society
Dr. Malloy is a former Chief and President of Staff at the Kate B. Reynolds
Memorial Hospital, where he also served as Chief of Surgical Service. From
1953 until 1981, Dr. Malloy was Director of Student Health at Winston-Salem
State University.
With all of his accomplishments, Rembert Malloy is best known in the
community for being a doctor who cared enough to do free camp physical exams
for underprivileged children, for seeing that people who needed surgery got it
regardless of their ability to pay, and for taking strong stands on issues affecting
his community.
Dr. Malloy has served on various boards ranging from the American Cancer
Society to the Best Choice Center. He has worked with families abusing their
children through the Exchange SCAN program, where he became a source of r
strength for the families he helped and for the other volunteers.
While Dr. Malloy "doesn't do a lot of talking," he has certainly been a
visionary and an activist for many years. When the community needed a leader,
| he would lead; when the community needed needed a push, he gave it; when the
1 community needed his quiet support, it was always there.
