Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church is going strong
into its second century. The members of the church
celebrated its 100th anniversary with the theme,
"Our First Century ? To God Be The Glory." Har
vey Gantt, former candidate for North Carolina Sen
ate, was the guest speaker for the anniversary cele
bration banquet held Saturday, March 7 in the File
Goodwin Enrichment Center of Mt. Zion Baptist
Church.
In addition to the banquet, a rededication service
was held the following Sunday, March 8, in which
the congregation rededicated their lives and commit
ment to God. Dr. K.O.P. Goodwin was the guest
speaker for that service. According to the Rev. Dou

He added that "our building of this church pre
vented this area from just being another vacant lot,
because we participated in the process of building the
building and also purchasing land for future expan
sion."
Today, Mt. Pleasant is indeed looking toward
future expansion. With a growing congregation of
nearly 300 members, the Rev. Summers says he
would like to see the church become more involved
in the community.
"I see the church, at this point, taking some seri
ous steps towards being more of a church that will
serve the community rather than itself," he said.
"We have developed a mission statement that
will address not only the internal needs of this con
gregation, but the external needs of those in this
community, state, as well as world. And we're quite
proud that we've developed a mission statement for
the next century."
That statement says that "The mission of
Mount Pleasant Baptist Church of Winston-Salem,
North Carolina is to declare Christ as Lord and

to spread God's word, to make Christian Disci

glas Summers, pastor of Mt. Pleasant, "Now that
God has brought us thus far in this first century
? 100 years of existence with Christ ? we've got
another century to look."
Mt. Pleasant, located at 795 Northwest Craw
ford Place, off of Old Cherry Street, was first found
ed in 1892. The church started out as a Sunday
School, and was later developed into a church.
According to church officials, Mt. Pleasant was the
first church in Winston-Salem to organize a youth
gospel choir in the 1950s, and also the first African
American church in the city to have an ordained
female deacon. .
Also, according to the Rev. Henry Lewis, for
mer pastor of Mt. Pleasant, and chairman of the
100th Anniversary Committee, the church took an
active role in the urban renewal of the Kimberly
Park area.
"We were right in the middled urban renewal," -
he said. "This community was caught up in the urban
renewal plan and our church participated in the urban
renewal of this area, by being able to purchase this
land to build this building, and participate in creating

by God's love through dedicated commitment,
strive to meet the physical, mental, and spiritual
needs of this church, this community, and the
world."
To help carry out that mission, Summers stated
that a long-range planning committee will soon be
formed to develop and implement 'program's that will
not only reach out to the church members, but to the
community as a whole.
Plans for the immediate future have not yet been
made, but Summers said "It is my hope that we will
complete an educational wing. It is very much need
ed to fulfill the teaching part of the church. It is my
hope as well that we'll initiate programs from this
particular church to aid in the holistic part of a per
son.
